At least 9 people shot in D.C.

Nine people were wounded along a city block in southern Washington, D.C., Tuesday night after shooters opened fire on a crowd, police said.

Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the shooting prompted a lengthy police chase that ended in the arrest of three people. Four officers were treated for minor injuries from an accident during the chase.

The victims who were shot near the 5000 block of South Capitol Street included six males and three females, and some were in very serious condition, Lanier said.

A tenth person was shot on nearby Galveston Street, but it wasn't clear whether the two shootings were related.

Lanier decline to give more details, saying it was too early in the investigation.

However, she told reporters that, "We've made a lot of progress to stop gang retaliation and violence and, in the end, if this ends up being some kind of gang retaliation then shame on all of us."

Even if this was about "Drugs" 9 people being shot over dope is unusual. Gang related seems more like it. They were probably hanging out and a rival gang did a "payback" I guess it could still be over the local drug trade since that seems to be what Gangs do best..."The Wire" comes to mind.

Someone should become more familiar with the Constitution. The right to bear arms is actually for the purpose of raising a militia to defend the nation.....but it is also designed to protect the "people" from the infringement of (our own) government out of control.....facts are totally lacking in this instance however logic would and should lead one to a conclusion of gang violence vs. political......laws are/should be to protect the "law abiding citizens", not restrict their freedoms. There are numerous inherrant problems which lead to what is going on in areas such as the one in DC. These are not new and are by far too complex for simple solutiolns such as gun control. We need, as a society, to stop treating the symtoms and begin treating the illness. Much of what is occuring is not out of scale with history, it is simply more obvious due to the speed of the media and the notoriety for the spreaders of the tales. Lets begin addressing the problems at the root, not extremeties. The solutions will not be easy nor will they be quick, but we can do it.

Let's see.... Firearms in DC where by the way, they are ilegal... It takes an idiot to think that a gun committed this act and shot all these people by it's self.... What if an armed, well trained citizen had been close by and took out the shooters before they could hit anyone. How many of those injured could have been spared the pain and possible death. And before you gun hating idiots make comments about this... If you had been one of those people who were in harms way, would have stopped that well trained armed citizen and said no don't use your awful weapon to save my life... Please people, get real! If you think otherwise, just put a sign around your neck that says "if someone attacks tries to rape, robe, or do me harm I do not wish for an armed well trained citizen to use his or her gun to save my life.... Wear that out in DC and see what happens... Idiots!

How can it be right-wing related? If it was, then there'd be a shoot out among all participants as they would carry guns. Did you know that nine states with the lowest violent crime rates are all right-to-carry states? Makes you think.

This is so sad. Two weeks ago, we moved out of a DC suburb to the downtown area of a mid-sized city in Oregon. Since then we have not heard one police siren – and have been enjoying how friendly the people are here. Many cities have used this city as an example of proper development, stellar public transportation, and great cultural programming for its citizens. I'm now convinced that DC is doing something drastically wrong; nourishing violence like this....

This offense on law abiding citizens must stop. Time to take action against the gun toting ignorant black juveniles. We are fed up and time is coming soon.

The funny part is, several are saying guns should be banned(Even though it is our second amendment right. If you don't like it move to Russia and be a slave). Yet Guns are Illegal in Washington D.C...........So as you can see. Outlawing guns will still not keep it out of the hands of people whom intend to inflict harm onto others.
This was likely another gang fight. Happens all day everyday in major cities.

anybody been to the 5000 block of South Capitol?

I don't think any "right-winger" or tea-bagger would be found there. i doubt the people that pulled the trigger know what the tea party is...or care...i know i don't.

biggest thing to happen to the 5000 block is popeye's.

The Tea Party is not right wing or left wing. It's a Tea Party, all are invited to drink the punch of right wing speakers. No, the Tea Party is for us all, to let our over sized government now we are the power, and that we hold the keys to the kingdom. Devide and you will fall!

No threats from right-wingers? Did someone really say that? Umm.....ever heard of Timothy McVeigh? I guess he didn't really THREATEN, per se. How about the Anthrax mailer? Give me a break.

But certainly, I agree with most that immediately pinning this on any political group is just silly. This is more than likely gang violence of some kind. It was on South Capital Street in the 5000 block. There are no right-wing groups down there, I guarantee that.

Australia is a good example of a country that rounded up guns. Now the law abiding have not and the criminals have guns. Guess what? Violent crime has increased steadily.
Don't take my word for it, Google Australia gun control and read the truth.

Criminals do NOT obey laws, why can't people comprehend that.

Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong all taught that guns were dangerous. Only the government should have guns.

Yeah, you see what happened after they implemented their policy.

Improve life for people so they don't see the need for crime.
Then for those who still insist on being criminal, round them up, not the guns of the law abiding.

What's next? Outlaw knives so we can't cut up our food/

I love the comments... I'm almost 100% sure the right-wing "gangbanger night" fundraiser was the cause of this. Just as I'm almost certain every gang member is a campaign contributor. Come on folks, just because it's DC doesn't mean there's a political tie. Every city, big or small, has violence. Some cover it up better than others for a number of reasons. All-in-all, people are getting shot, stabbed, and beaten to death every day. Why don't we spend more time with our kids and less time surfing the internet to promote our views to people who have no impact on the violence? Because we're lazy... we're pre-occupied... and it's easier to just complain about it or blame it on others. Good job America.

Pay attention, John. Read the story carefully! The shootings were is southern D.C., and the police chief referred to gang violence. Surely the gang bangers in the ghetto don't qualify as right-wing.
