At least 9 people shot in D.C.

Nine people were wounded along a city block in southern Washington, D.C., Tuesday night after shooters opened fire on a crowd, police said.

Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the shooting prompted a lengthy police chase that ended in the arrest of three people. Four officers were treated for minor injuries from an accident during the chase.

The victims who were shot near the 5000 block of South Capitol Street included six males and three females, and some were in very serious condition, Lanier said.

A tenth person was shot on nearby Galveston Street, but it wasn't clear whether the two shootings were related.

Lanier decline to give more details, saying it was too early in the investigation.

However, she told reporters that, "We've made a lot of progress to stop gang retaliation and violence and, in the end, if this ends up being some kind of gang retaliation then shame on all of us."

No matter how many laws you make, criminals will always have access to guns. That is why they are criminals. But don't prevent the law abiding citizen from owning a gun.

Total breakdown of society. People on mainstreet the or inner city see the rich getting richer with huge govt. assistance. White collar crime ignored or condoned. The other 99% want theirs too. Violence is simply a symptom of the masses being ignored or doubting whether or not their votes count.

Forget gun control, I was a lifelong Dem. and now am independent. I carry.

I have no intention of becoming a victim. Wolf or Sheep baby!

It's been long overdue to get rid of the 2nd amendment. We are not in the 18th century any more. We no longer have rifles that can only shoot one round per minute. We are not at risk of being colonized by the King of England. Time to progress and move forward as a society.

Many forget history...what is the very first thing Hitler did in
'civilized" Germany in 1939 and Stalin in Russia?? They took the right away from the people to defend themselves....

Last year, the Supreme Court significantly relaxed the long-standing D.C. ban on handguns, just for everyone's information, especially those who would suggest that this tragedy could've been prevented with laxer gun laws. Moreover, gang violence, and that's what kind this event almost certainly is, isn't deterred by, say, D.C. homeowners having firearms at the ready. What could the citizens in the crowd have done? This wasn't some sort of nightmarish home invasion; this was a drive-by. The only thing more guns could add to this madness is more means of the wronged exacting revenge as vigilantes a.k.a. the escalation of gang violence.

Also, I'll finish by saying D.C. is a much, much safer place than it used to be in, say, the early 1990s. For anyone who's wondering, 9 Washingtonians getting shot in a single night in a single place is practically unheard of and, as such, qualifies as important news. This may surprise some people, but actual human beings are born and bred in the District and count as authentic American citizens. Really. Wikipedia it.

Right wing anger? Does every damn story on CNN have to be politicized in the comments section! But since it was started, lets play. Is it right wingers or left wingers that need body guards when giving public speeches? Its right wingers. As for "NRA blood money". Does it ever occur to you that some politicians actually believe in the right to bare arms on principal. I do, the NRA doesn't give me money and I don't even own a gun!

Has anyone heard the term "flamebait"? But seriously, criminals don't give two dingles about the Law. If you are going to commit a crime, you will do it with whatever is handy. That could mean a gun, bat, sword (hey, its happened) or a pipe bomb you made using the internet. The best way to stop a crime is preventing it at the source. Lets not look at guns and instead look at schools and our very own culture. What do we do to prevent this besides punishing the criminal. Thanks everyone.

75 % of black kids born to single family homes, 40 % of males either in jail/on trial/on probation. THE worst public schools in the nation, HORRIBLE role models like Michael vick or Plaxico Burris. WHAT do YOUR expect!

Is anyone else bothered by the police chief saying, "If this ends up being some kind of gang retaliation then shame on all of us"? Whatever happened to shame on the shooters?

I think you all should be ashamed of yourselves for treating this with such complacency. I venture to say that none of you have been to SE let alone worked with anyone living in such an environment. I am an educator working in an inner city school and I understand the dynamics of the community. The fact that people were killed is enough to make this a tragedy. It is a shame that you all would only treat it as such if the victims were white male politicians. In both cases, innocent people would die from a random act of senseless violence. But because it happens in the inner city, its not tragic its usual? I hope none of you claim to think post racially because it is clear that your thoughts are perpetrated by white privilege and ignorance.

I was just in DC this afternoon. Let's see, police beefed up security in the subways. with more police and bomb snifing dogs. Then police had to move their communications to an emergency management center because their communications system complelely failed. Then about 11:00 pm last night they diverted a plane from Regean Airport(downtown) to Dulles.. Said it was because of a bomb threat then later because of suspect passenger. Now 9 or 10 shot in south DC. All this while law enforcement was conducting a major emergency diaster drill. All this tells me to: 1. Don't try to fly into downtown DC. 2. Don't try to call the police for help. 3. Don't take the subway and if you do, then don't pet the dogs. 4. And for God's sake don't get caught in south DC.

I am seriously appalled that some of you are so quick to jump to the conclusion that it has something to do with "right wingers," whatever that is. The people who did this are criminals and it should be dealt with accordingly. To blame it on someone or a group of people that you dont like without any evidence is irresponsible and senseless. What planet are you people living on?

Are you kidding me? Right Wingers? Hah. This was just the opposite of right wingers. This was the result of Black culture invading the peace and serenity of middle class America. It plays out all over the country. This was just street culture, an unfortuntely common everyday occurence in big cities. And it has everything to do with the Liberal cause of blaming someone else for the Black cultures propensity for violence,
