U.S. warship captures suspected pirate mother ship

The USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel and then captured it.

A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

I respect our country's gentle approach towards encouraging a more civilized world but with the pirates we could justifiably be more aggressive. A few innocent people might get hurt early on but in the long run it would save lives and make this a better world to live in.

Ha ha. I bet the pirates got confused at night and thought it was a cruise ship or a tanker.

I've always thought it would be a good business to rent a small cruise ship, mount deck guns on it and charge people $100k a head to go hunt pirates. That would be fun.

I have been waiting for this to happen. Attacking a US Navy warship? These fellows have more audacity than smarts.

Thanks to our military in defending the commercial sea routes.

Maybe it was too dark for the Pirates to see that they were firing on a U.S. Navy vessel. Or maybe they were just really stupid. I'm leaning on the latter.

"Thank you" to the crew of the USS Nicholas for putting yourself in harm's way and acting professionally and admirably.
