U.S. warship captures suspected pirate mother ship

The USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel and then captured it.

A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

    @rick:
    Did you just try to twist this story into an anti-Obama thing? LOL at your pathetic life. "Hey everyone! Obama sucks because there are still pirates in the world.!" Ok, we get the picture– Republicans hate Obama. But this article is about 1 pirates and 2 US Navy. Can we please leave Obama out of it for once? PLEASE?

    Oh, and good job Navy.

    Hmmm – I wonder if they would have fired on an aircraft carrier. I guess they could get a pretty good ransom from that – or maybe a nuclear sub cruising on the surface.

    ...And 90 minutes to capture them? I wonder how much laughter they were having onboard the USS Nicholas.

    A positive step, but don't get too excited. All these pirates will shortly be released and will go straight back to doing what they do.

    Oh, and I exect the usual story from the Middle east which will report that these were all innocent fishermen.

    You all make it sound so easy. The area is full of fishing boats large and small, and small coastal vessels that ply trade up and down the Horn of Africa and across to Yemen.

    How are military vessels to identify the pirates when they make themselves appear as innocuous as all the peaceful vessels? The pirates do not fly the Skull and Crossbones flags. They are clever at disguises, and often have small boats that can outrun most Naval ships [but not their helicopters].

    Technology plays a big part of this fight, but until we get some help on the ground [stable governments in the area], this will continue to grow as a serious threat to major shipping, particularly oil traffic. This is why there is strong suspicion that Al qaeda is at least partially financing the pirate effort, and supplying weapons and equipment.

    Obviously these "pirates" were profiled! Obama will have the Navy sailors prosecuted for violating the pirate's civil rights, God I hope they didnt get a black eye also... Eric Holder will probably give the pirates immunity to testify.
