U.S. warship captures suspected pirate mother ship

The USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel and then captured it.

A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

@rick – spoken as someone who never spent a day in the service, I'll bet. Otherwise, you'd know better. And it's "Commander in Chief," not "Commander and Chief." Go hang your American flag backwards too.

Maybe the pirates will try to take on an Aegis ship or an aircraft carrier. It would be funny to watch a pirate ship take on a carrier.

Hello, you're all forgetting something 🙂 We need to hold them for some ransom first, get a little cash back and then sink them as they sail away chewing cot (or clot, whatever that drug is)! Hit them where it hurts, take what they've been taking, and then they learn!

Rick stated earlier : "too bad obama is the commander and chief or more pirates would have been captured."

Ummm Rick...How many of these pirates were captured under the Bush/Cheney watch?

Now this! We have taken out more terrorist in Pakistan since Obama entered the White House then during the previous eight years. Navy seals took out two of these pirates out, freeing the ships captain before this. Come on you conservatives recite you mantra. On the count of three:"Obama is soft on terrorism!" What does the government ever do right? If you were captured by Somali pirates would you want to hear someone from the government saying they were here to help you?

Reading through the comments here, I don't think the pirates were as stupid as many of you think. It was likely dark (midnight, after all), the Nicholas was in a shipping route and was likely running with few lights to boot. I'd bet the pirates didn't know it was a warship until their RPGs were answered with cannons. It's also very hard to tell if one of these boats is actually pirates, or if they're just fishermen. Somalia does have a large fleet of fishing vessels that are regularly in the area, hence the international forces cannot attack these boats until they take action against another ship.

This is exactly the way it should go, I think. The pirates have not killed many people, but instead seem to treat this as a game show... with a big potential payout if they win. The crew of the Nicholas should be lauded for their restraint.

5 pirates in a sciff attack a thing that looks like that? They MUST have been smoking. I wonder what they thought they saw.

Given the quality of shelter, food, medicine and education available to American military prisoners, I'm surprised every able Somali isn't out on the I.O shoting at any/every American warship in sight. A bad day in an American prison is still quite a bit better than a good day on the streets of Mogadishu.

I think the "facts" of this story will change. Pirates on a skiff firing on a US warship...right. Also "mother ship" conjures up images of a floating mega base when in fact it probably was a 28 ft fishing boat.
