U.S. warship captures suspected pirate mother ship

The USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel and then captured it.

A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

OK, I agree that our tax dollars being spent on this should show results. But anyone that HONESTLY BELIEVES that they "fired on us first" needs a lesson in sifting through propaganda. I'm not saying don't sink pirate ships. I'm just saying people need to think a bit objectively.

To "rick" who brought Obama into this Navy ship article with negative comments about Obama as Commander -in-Chief, almost every war of the last century was fought under Democrat Presidents: Wilson WW I, Roosevelt WW II, Truman Korea (finished by Eisenhower) , Viet Nam Kennedy & Johnson (started by Eisenhower finished by Nixon). This concept that Democrats are "yellow" is utter nonsense. Democrats may rather spend tax payer dollars on education than bombs, when it comes to fight a war, they will stand should-to-shoulder with their Republican citizens.

I love the use of the word "suspected". Technically it's true. But still reminds me of how "overlawyered" the US is. The traditonal way of dealing with high seas priates is summary execution. I like that idea.

But anyway – kudo to the US Navy and LOL at the stupid "suspected" pirates.

I guess they can't tell the difference between a frieghter and a big GREY HULL with lots of cannons and weapons that can wipe out cities in one shot... Well they should of been blown out of the water that would teach them...

USS Nicolas is a 450-ft, 4200-ton, 33mph frigate armed with missiles, torpedoes, cannons and Seahawk combat helicopters. Are those pirates NUTS?

Rick: I saw your too bad obama is the commander and chief or more pirates would have been captured.

When they captured a US ship in the past while Obama was in office the Navy got rid of most of the pirates and we captured one that went to trial...so know what you're commenting about.

Funny, thats like a palistinian throwing a rock at an israeli tank... KILL THESE STUPID PEOPLE AND SAVE ME JOE TAXPAYER SOME CASH! These stories shouldn't even be in the news. KILL THEM ALL and we really don't even need to know about it. I get to hear all the funnies from relatives in the service who get to kill the bad guys. Quite comical, the new low for stupidity just dropped another level. I'd love to watch a video of the PHANLAX or SEAWIZ weapons system unload on some crappy little pirate junker. It'd be over in the blink of an eye.

The US Navy has been on anti piracy patrols for the last 200+ years. 24/7 365. Its a big ocean, and whenever you let up in one area to chase down pirates in another, the pirates you just left behind resume action.

Piracy is one of the main problems facing the navy – always has been, always will be. The real question is how to do it cheaper.

This last action seems like a good use of taxpayer dollars to me, though I think the UN should be footing part of the bill for piracy abatement missions. After all, everyone (except the pirate "floaters") wins when the US warship sinks a pirate ship. This is especially important considering these are definitely not our territorial waters or remotely close to a home port for that warship. That kind of travel (ship, several hundred sailors, fuel, food) is not cheap.

Now if the Navy would just go after the teabaggers.... 😉

Have you seen the anti-tea party bumper sticker? "If You Don't Like Government, Move To Somalia". If the teabaggers have their way, we'll all be pirates soon. To h3ll with "E Pluribus Unum", the right wingnuts think the motto of the USA should be "every man for himself!"

These guys are not only brazen, stupid, but just plain dumb. Taking on a warship, you've got to be kidding. Why bother taking prisoners, just sink the whole lot. If we're going to war with these fools, destroy them all! Let's quit being so sensitive.
