U.S. warship captures suspected pirate mother ship

The USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel and then captured it.

A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

In repy to Rick and anyone who thinks like him that "'More pirates would have been captured if Obama wasn't the president" How many pirates were captured by Bush and his bully's that to a man were afraid to serve this country.

I served the US to protect the rights of the people to believe how they wish and to say what they wish but I also was willing to fight to protect the idea that we vote and win or lose we support the outcome. And for those of you who want to repeal new laws, We voted last year the majority supported Obama and now the Minority should also, until the next vote. I despise what Bush and cronies did to freedom in this country, and yet I am a loyal American who did not shoot at nor threaten my countries government because I didn't get my way.

Man up! Become a good American, And support the commander in Chief even if you dont like him.

The "attack," as it were, happened a little after midnight, local time. These pirates were probably up late, chewing on khat, saw the Nicolas from a distance, and probably figured it was a small commercial ship ripe for the picking.

    Big mistake.

thies are the kind of people you would have given them a firing quad in that see and then cut them into halves with a live tranmmision to serve as deterrent to others

Could everyone just calm down? This was not an even match, of course the Navy comes out on top, doing exactly what we would expect professionals to do and not acting like the hormonal adolescents who are posting here so put the flags away and cut back on the adrenaline production.

I truly do not understand why we have put up with this whole pirate issue for so long. I voted for the president and will again in 2012. However the united states has a military large enough and powerful enough to take on china, russia and their loony hangons so why we do not just send in a large enough marine force strike force and end this. I understand that we are not that eager to go back into the sinkhole that we were in in the 90's. However, the reason we got in trouble there in the first place was because we send troops there that, lets face it, are trained to kill people and were told "be nice, feed the nice people and try not to get involved in the civil war RAGES all about you. SEND IN THE MARINES AND LET THEM BE MARINES.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We catch these idiots and now have to spend our money on sending them to trial and supplying the food, clothing and shelter. Maybe this is why they roll the dice and fire on a warship. They want to be caught for the standard of living raise?

Man, I would have loved to be on that Navy ship last night. Talk about some fun target practice!

The story said "shortly after midnight," so I'm guessing, like many Navy vessels, they float pretty dark after sundown (short of running lights), and to look at it on the open water at midnight, you wouldn't be able to tell the diff between a frigate and a freighter. And what are the odds of tossing some bullets at a random boat in the coean and hitting a frigate if you're a pirate? Wouldn't suggest they go to Vegas...

O.K. So now what do we do with the "suspected" piratres and mother ship? Who has jurisdiction? What are the charges? Who do we deliver them to? How do we compensate them for the harm we have caused them without due process (maybe they thought the ship was a big sea monster or were cleaning their guns when they went off or who knows what)?

Go Navy! To bad we can't use this type of dogged pursuit along the US/Mexican border for the drug lords.

Let's see; it was dark when the priate started shooting so they likely didn't know what they were shooting at until it was well past too late. I'd have loved to see the looks on their faces when they realized their mistake! =P
