U.S. warship captures suspected pirate mother ship

The USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel and then captured it.

A U.S. warship sank a pirate skiff and captured a pirate mother ship in the Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to a statement from U.S. Naval Forces Africa.

The frigate USS Nicholas came under fire from a pirate vessel shortly after midnight in international waters west of the Seychelles, according to a U.S. military statement.

The Nicholas returned fire and pursued the skiff as it fled, capturing it about 90 minutes later. Three suspected pirates aboard the skiff were taken into custody, along with two others aboard a suspected pirate mother ship that was nearby.

What are these idiots thinking? We might not be able to handle winning a war in a place the size of Texas but we are capable of sinking a small boat or even a ship. Great job to those crew members of the USS Nicholas and to the brave men and women serving our Country and protecting America's interest.

I guess the pirates don't have night optics to know the difference between a merchant ship and a warship. Go Navy

It is about time. We took some action, shame we had to wait for them to attack one of our warships.

The primary mission of the US Navy since its commission was to keep the se lanes open and free of pirates and nations that would prevent such usage for passage.

I would only hope our folks in DC realize this some day and with help from all nations enforce such international laws to protect all people who use the sea and threatened by terrorists (pirates same thing).

    Silly Pirates.
Bit off just a bit more than they could chew.
Sounds like there was enough justification to sink the Mother Ship as well.
    Maybe next time.

We should use Navy submarines to combat pirates, and it should never make the news.

Why custody? Why not just blow the skiff out of the water? I am sure the ordnance used to obliterate the skiff and pirates would cost much less than the food and the costs of the administrative b.s. they will need to go through with keeping prisoners in custody!

    Next time, shoot to kill.

There's an old saying in the RPG world.
If something is bigger than you, don't fight it.

These pirates would do well to learn that lesson...
