L.A. mayor looking at shutting city down two days a week

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa wants a plan to be drawn up to shut the city down for two days a week beginning April 12 because of their budget crisis.

"There are no easy decisions or simple ways to solve this budget crisis,” Mayor Villaraigosa said in a statement. “But as the CEO of this great city, it is my responsibility to make these difficult but necessary decisions to steer the city out of this crisis and onto solid financial ground."

Villaraigosa said he hoped a plan could quickly be developed so they could calculate how much money it would save the city while they hold emergency meetings to try and figure out how to replenish the city's general fund.

"We can no longer wait. We can no longer keep saying no," Villaraigosa said. "We must act now."

    Dear Sam F,

When Reagon was governor we had a surplus, and when Reagon was president he lowed unemployment by 6 percent interest rates by 10 percent in less than 6 years. Hmmm, it would seem there is something said for breaking unions, and allow people to keep their money.

As for those referring to the "illegals", do you know that economically speaking, they actually end up saving everyone money? Do you really want to start forking over $2 more for your fruit? Study the facts instead of having your personal prejudices cloud your feedback.

    Dear Rusty,

Yes, we can even print money with it, as that way it will have some value to all the potheads. What we really need is more drugged out people, that will cause everything to be so much better.

    here's my point

    1.Get the border straight!
2.Throw all those convict to Afghanistan and let them be a front liner, instead our own soldiers. we freaking spend billion dollar to these convict..
3.legalized marijuana – will create tax revenue
4.subsidized the spending of public school.
    5. A lot of tax break to small businesses so owners wont be relocating to other states.

Okay people, clearly none of you have learned anything from the economic down-turn. LA and NYC are two financial centers of the world. The city's financial crisis is caused by the same over-lending and over-spending on bonds that the entire nation has done. Out of all states, California is in the worst shape for its housing market, and many properties have been abandoned. Because of this, property tax income has drastically dropped in cities like Los Angeles, cities which are reliant upon that income to continue operations.

This is all a result of the big financial crisis that the entire nation is experiencing. You can blame certain leaders or parties if you like, but ultimately it was the fault of banks and us consumers whom borrowed what we can't afford.

Texas has a surplus because it is still oil-rich and the center of the oil trade. States that do not have access to such resources and do not have such businesses operating within their borders are not so fortunate.

    Solution: Legalize merijuana.

Plus one million points to me for actually knowing what I'm talking about.

During the LA riots the governor of California sent out National Guardsmen with only one bullet per soldier. Hopefully the their police are better-funded.

Here's an idea- let city employees work 5 days a week but at shorter shifts, with fewer people per shift. For example instead of 20 people in an office working 9 to 5; have 10 work 9:30 to noon and 10 work 1 to 5.

    @MarkRSM

You haven't looked at the legalization proposals, and the state of Washington is more liberal than California when it comes to drugs.

Legalizing marijuana trade would increase state/city revenues ten-fold, not to mention decrease crime ten-fold. When marijuana becomes legal and cheap (not to mention taxed from here all the way to Uzbekistan), there will be less prison crowding (less tax dollars spent on the legal system to process and keep inmates), more revenues, happier citizens, and far less crime (why would criminals exist to smuggle and sell something that's 100% legal?).

I'm sure you can see the logic in this. I don't smoke weed (or consume any mind-altering substance), but I do support the bill, because it's a harmless drug and will help California chill out, not to mention become the richest state in the nation.

Look at the un-biased studies, the budget proposals, and do your research before you make a decision. Don't be like Tea Party supporters and just listen to Fox News all day.

California needs to take a lesson from the State of Texas. Increase Automoblie registration fees by 5 to 10 dollars. Increase drivers licence surcharge fees. i.e DWI fines
suspended licence fees. Boater registration fees. State Park usage fees add 2 or 3 dollars per car. Put parking meeters in more areas. New driver fees. Increase the tax on gambling in the state. There are ways to raise money Explore every option before cutting city services.

California as a whole is broke. LA being essentially a Third World country is in even worse shape. I looked up how many city employees there were. 47817 salaried employees. The second biggest pay grade is made up of those earning more than $100,000 a year. 6072. To those who say legalize pot and tax it..... I live up where most of it is grown. Just not enough land. We'd have to plow up the entire central valley of California and the rest of the country would have to go on the equivalent of a three pack a day habit. Oops, can't do that. The California Water Resources Board, effective this year, has cut back water deliveries to the central valley... previously considered the most productive farmland in the country. Why? The delta smelt are endangered so the water is being sent through the delta and then out to sea.
