L.A. mayor looking at shutting city down two days a week

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa wants a plan to be drawn up to shut the city down for two days a week beginning April 12 because of their budget crisis.

"There are no easy decisions or simple ways to solve this budget crisis,” Mayor Villaraigosa said in a statement. “But as the CEO of this great city, it is my responsibility to make these difficult but necessary decisions to steer the city out of this crisis and onto solid financial ground."

Villaraigosa said he hoped a plan could quickly be developed so they could calculate how much money it would save the city while they hold emergency meetings to try and figure out how to replenish the city's general fund.

"We can no longer wait. We can no longer keep saying no," Villaraigosa said. "We must act now."

Chad, mail delivery is a function of the U.S. Post Office, not municipalities. Gabriel, the employees will be required to take two UNPAID furlough days a week.

why not just cut the pay and have the workers work 5 days? that way you dont lose any productivity.

The Federal government won't stop running, so the mail will still work, and emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) will still run.

Libraries may be closed, the zoos will be closed, the parks will be closed, the non essential services will be shut down, and the city workers will be FURLOUGHED (as in not paid) during the shut downs.

Don't try to get any sort of license on those days off, and don't try to set up your unemployment checks on those days either.

And the problems aren't caused by "illeagles". Those are just sick birds.

The problems aren't caused by illegals either – they get paid so little they help keep the cost of goods down.

    Dear Friends,

Ask yourself if you are getting value for your tax dollars, city of LA takes in more money per person today than at any time in it history, and they do not have enough money. It is cause they have given out such great pensions and increase the pay of the government workers. LA needs to file chapter 11, with the rest of CA and start over.

    Dear christina,

We have the most liberal drug laws in the nation, and we are the one of the most messed up, wonder if they are connected. We make drugs legal and take away guns, and how does this make us wealthier? Think about wealth is, it is creating goods and service others values, how many valuable goods and services can potheads make?

Highly disappointing that the so-called CEO of Los Angeles wants to have both his employees and the citizenry of Los Angeles suffer due to his arrogance, poor choices and grandstanding.

This plan will solve temporary LA budget, but will create a huge backlog in Municipal work. One possible solution is to reduce by 5% the payroll, in other word 5% reduction on the paycheck.

  12. Happy Liberals?

Here's a novel idea - CUT SPENDING! I bet Los Angeles has boatloads of crazy public programs, like subsidizing having tattoos removed for those who can't find jobs because they look like recently released felons and subsidized teeth whitening for those who haven't brushed their teeth in years. We are seeing the Nanny State crumbling before our very eyes. Just wait until it expands to the national level. Well done, liberals!

Interesting... the reality is that people live 7 days a week, 365 days a year... so how the hell can someone limit their life to 3 days a week? We suppose to live in the 21st century not in the bronze age. Cut back your leviathan government the unproductive workforce, the idiotic machine without market need, you can't cut reality, you can't cut the number of days. You can try but this won't solve anything it will only generate more problems. The only way forward is to let the productive people to work, don't limit their ability. Cut the things nobody need, not all the things.

Disband the Police and Firemens Unions. The pay they make is outrageous, not to mention their benefits and pensions. They all own businesses on the side because they never work.

    @Arine Ward:

The legislature of California has been Democratic run for the last 38 of 40 years. If you believe The Terminator (or Republicans in general) runs California, you fail.

Nothern Californians are the ones, for the most part, who vote in all the fruity liberals that cause the type of mess we are seeing today. So yes, please split California in to two so all the liberal nuts can have the north. My water prices may sky rocket, but it would be totally worth it.

@People who blame the entertainment industry:

LOL!!!! So much fail my side hurts.

@People who believe this is illegals fault.

Ilegals are a fairly small part of this problem. This problem is proposition 13, energy run a muck, government salaries out of line with reality, massive waste, ridiculous corporate tax rates...and then illegals.

In general, GO MAYOR!! I love it when a democrat gets all responsible.
