Rain, flooding kill at 93 people in Brazil

[Posted at 4:32 p.m.] The death toll has risen to at least 93 people killed and another 93 people injured.

[Posted at 1:07 p.m.] Heavy rains and flooding in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday killed 54 people and injured at least 87, Maj. Ronaldo Nogueira of the Rio fire department told CNN.

About 287 people had been rescued, and others were trapped under mudslides caused by the rain, he said.

A record-breaking 11.3 inches (288 millimeters) of rain have fallen in Rio in the last 24 hours, Mayor Eduardo Paes said, according to the state-run Agencia Brasil news agency.

The rain was forecast to continue through Wednesday, Agencia Brasil reported.
