Toll from Brazil flooding reaches 102

The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and surrounding areas reached 102 on Wednesday, the country's civil defense said.

About 287 people have been rescued, and others were trapped under mudslides caused by the rain, Maj. Ronaldo Nogueira said on Tuesday.

A record-breaking 11.3 inches of rain fell in Rio within 24 hours on Tuesday, Mayor Eduardo Paes said, according to the state-run Agencia Brasil news agency.

The downpour continued Wednesday.
