Two Palestinians were killed and three others were injured early Tuesday in an exchange of fire between members of the militant group Islamic Jihad and the Israeli army, medical officials in Gaza said.
The fighting began around 5 a.m. local time near the Kissufim border crossing, according to an Israeli military spokeswoman.
Troops spotted four people planting explosive devices along the fence separating Gaza from Israel, the spokeswoman said.
Israeli forces fired at the suspects and identified "direct hits," according the spokeswoman. No Israeli soldiers were wounded in the fighting.
Officials in the militant group Islamic Jihad told CNN that members of the organization were conducting a "mission" along the Gaza border and said that the Palestinian killed was one of their fighters.
