Michael Douglas' son Cameron sentenced to five years

Actor Michael Douglas is photographed as he walks into court for his son's sentencing Tuesday.

A judge sentenced actor Michael Douglas' son Cameron to five years in prison Tuesday for selling cocaine and methamphetamine.

Cameron Douglas, 31, was arrested July 2009 at the Manhattan Club in New York City and later pleaded guilty to drug charges.

“I apologize to the court for my decisions and actions that put me in front of you today," Cameron Douglas told the judge.

He added that he wants to take the right path, "the true right path."

Cameron Douglas, wearing a suit and his voice trembling when he spoke, looked at his parents Michael Douglas and Diandra Douglas throughout his time in court.

"I ask for an opportunity to be a role model to my younger brothers and sisters," Cameron Douglas said.

His father, actor Michael Douglas, cried as his son addressed the court.

Unfortunate, a confined drug rehab facility for five years would have been better; heroin addiction is a tough one to beat; who knows, maybe in jail he'll get clean, as long as his time is supported with heavy duty therapy.

But if that were anyone other than a celeb's son, it would be 10-15+

Glad to see they're not making any acceptions because he is related to a celebrity. Cameron was guilty of the drug charges so he should serve his time. Good!!!!!!

is this state court??? if he can stay away from the drugs in jail for 2 or three years - then he has a shot when he is released -- if he stays clean and sober the rest of his life, he will be grateful for the time in jail

The humility and love the Douglas family has shown in inspiring. None of us are exempt from the travails of life. May this be a life changing event for Cameron.

My heart goes out to the entire Douglas family. Having a child with a drug addiction and in trouble with the law is never a good thing but it appears the judge followed the law.

The compassion of the posts is amazing.

I wonder why more people don't show such compassion when the accused is a young, minority male from the inner city....

Well, as a parent my heart goes out to them. But I am glad to see he's doing real time and didn't get special treatment because Daddy's a movie star.

Wake up, America. Every government in the world, NATO, the stock exchange and banks are neck deep in the drug trade. Banks launder money from the dope trade. Why are we in Afghanistan? For the heroin trade and all those poppies growing in Afghanistan. When will we all wake up to what's happening right under our noses. The wealthy are making billions in profit from the drug trade. Remember our ex-President, G. W. Bush, Sr. was caught red handed in the dope trade. America, wake up!
