President Obama criticized a controversial new immigration bill in Arizona on Friday, calling it "misguided."
"Our failure to act responsible at the federal level will only open the door to irresponsibility by others. That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe," the president said at a naturalization ceremony for members of the military.
"In fact, I've instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation. But if we continue to fail to act at the federal level, we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country."
He added, "As a nation, as a people, we can choose a different future - a future that keeps faith with our history, with our heritage, and with the hope that America has always inspired in the hearts of people all over the world."

I thank our president and agree with him 100% regarding this new immigration policy and bill in Arizona.
Please remember that we are talking about human beings.

It's not ok to pick and choose the laws you want to follow. Mexico doesn't allow illegal immigration. Neither do other countries. Criminals are criminals. Those that wish to help are welcome to donate THEIR time and money to help. It's also a travesty that people that have less think they can steal from those that have more. Or that people think that EVERYONE should help when THEY think it's worthy. What happened to democracy and what happened to common sense laws that most other countries follow as well?
Deal with it executive branch! You have NO jurisdiction over the states.
Good for Obama. The Arizona immigration bill was a blatant attempt at racial profiling. I guarantee no whites, whatsoever, would be affected. Only Latinos and other people of color. There has to be a better way.
The Federal Gov't not inforcing immigration laws is the problem, not States, Cities, and citizens trying to do so. Support America, Arizona, and common sense.
I, as an American, cherish hard work and the rewards that come after a job well done (capitalism). I also respect the fact that my father and his parents legally became citizens of this nation because it offered dreams and hope they did not have elsewhere. My parents worked hard, I worked hard, and now I have an education and a good job, none of which was handed to me. If President Obamam thinks it's "unfair" for us to demand, as the greatest nation in the world, that people respect our laws, legally become citzens, and pay taxes, then we are more screwed under his "leadereship" than I thought the day he got elected.
I profoundly agree with you Mr. President. I wish all of us think and act like our great leader.
How about enforcing our laws! There's a difference between legal and ILLEGAL immigration. Stop encouraging people to come here illegally and rewarding them for breaking the law!
Why would he have a problem with it?
It keps people safe!
These people are here illegally, Its hard enough for a american "legal" citizen to get a job . Its even harder when we have to compete with illegal Immigrants!
Barack obama's grandmother is here illegally of course he will defnd them.
he needs to put "legal american people first!
Obama hasn't a clue!!! All he see's are new future Democrat voters who depend on the Socialist Democratic party.
So, is President Obama stating that individual states are incompetant in dealing with matters affecting their own borders? Sounds an aweful lot like he is saying that individual states are "stupid."
HA! Yeah OK Barry. The people love this legislation. It's about time.
The only thing "misguided" in this country is the person who is at the helm of her in the White House. Hopefully the rest of the country will follow in the footsteps of Arizona. Mexicans have caused crimes in all of our cities where they land to increase at a MINIMUM of 25%. They do as they please, get preferential treatment, get food stamps, free medical and are contributing to over population. America is being taken over by foreigners, i.e., paper Americans. Americans are tired of people vomiting across our borders and telling us what THEY want and what THEY are going to do. Push will eventually come to shove and it won't be peaceful.
Obama is a nut...the Feds fail to enforce laws against illegal immirgration, which Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California have huge problems with. I hope these other states follow the lead of Arizona and start protecting their borders because the Feds obviously don't want to do that...probably for political reasons.
Someone tell Obama to keep his nose out of State affairs.
Being politically correct and liberalism has brought us to this point. To coddle an illegal act is wrong and Obama should know better. Illegal immigrants are killing our economy and a hard stance is required.
