President Obama criticized a controversial new immigration bill in Arizona on Friday, calling it "misguided."
"Our failure to act responsible at the federal level will only open the door to irresponsibility by others. That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe," the president said at a naturalization ceremony for members of the military.
"In fact, I've instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation. But if we continue to fail to act at the federal level, we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country."
He added, "As a nation, as a people, we can choose a different future - a future that keeps faith with our history, with our heritage, and with the hope that America has always inspired in the hearts of people all over the world."

Furthermore, recognizing that the Federal government has FAILED to address the issue, Obama says his administration is closely watching the state's new legislation re violation of civil rights. If our Federal government were ever to say it had FAILED to implement a policy to protect our homeland security, then it would be incumbent for each State to implement legislation to protect its citizens. If the Federal government cannot get its act together, then it is the responsibility of each State to take action. Remember, it was the Fed's duty to protect against 911 and it was the failure of the Feds that allowed the 911 attack to occur.
"In fact, I've instructed members of my administration to closely monitor the situation and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation." What a joke!
Maybe Obama should instruct his administration to closely monitor the illegal immigrants flooding into the US. These people are a burden on jobs, healthcare, law enforcement etc… They are the ones breaking the law. Bring the National Guard home and have them help eforce our border states.
The Federal government hasn't done a thing and he has the nerve to criticize Arizona. Maybe if the Democrats were more concerned about the problems with illegal immigration than the Latino vote, they might do something.
finally, someone willing to make a decision and follow thru on it. feds lack the abiliy or willingness to make a decision. bravo to arizona. right or wrong, they are at least attempting to rectify a national problem at the state level.
I might have voted for you, but I don't agree with you, President Obama.
There is a clear difference between legal and illegal immigration. Stop trying to lump them together.
I am a liberal, but I do not like illegal immigration. You'd be surprised how many like-minded liberals there are.
The Federal government is failing to secure our borders. This is supposed to be one of its mandates. It is now up to the States to protect us from the invasion.
We need the illegals out and the jobs that have been moved away back here. As a democrat and a staunch supporter of the president, I hope that the government listens to us and enforces the immigration laws so the states dion't have to.
mr. president always remember we all immigrant here in the US....
You don't know what it's like to be invaded by a country as we are in Texas without a shot. There was a reason that we had immagretion quotas that didn't allow a huge percentage of one countryies immigrants in, it allowed them to be assimilated. It is sad that the lust for votes is turning a once strong country into a socialist country.
this bill so racist it is you people who support this are wrong for it. We live in the USA not china or Cuba this is wrong in all levels Ariz should be sue for all the money they have in their state for this non civil right action.
The bottom line is the Arizona legislation is unconstitutional, and I strongly believe it won't hold up in court.
Illegal is illegal. It's that simple.
This country was taken from the Indians, built on the backs of slaves, and sustained by the fruits of the poor and uneducated......If you are in America, and want a green card, then I think you should be able to get one. Give people time to get their paper-work together. Its easy to sit back and pass judgement in your nice house with a flat screen tv and food on the table.... Live and let live!!!!!!!
Obama needs to stay out. The government has demonstrated far too long they were not willing to make hard choices.
Obama needs to start enforcing the law, not allow millions of unwanted break the laws.
If there is a big problem, it is not President Obama nor his policies. It is the bigotry, hatred and fear expressed every day on these types of blogs. What has happened to us? We need to come up with a reasonable way for immigrants to become citizens. The "war" on immigration doesn't work, just like the "war" on drugs doesn't work. You can build walls, fences, more troops, etc. It won't work. John.
I don't get what the problem is with this. Don't police have to ask for a drivers license when they pull someone over anyway? With regard to racial profiling, what about they only ask people who can't speak english to offer citizenship documents. I'm sure also if they don't have them with them, they can bring them to the police station. This is what all other countries do, why do we have to have open doors to millions of the worlds poor coming here year after year. Also, how rediculous it is to add 20 million foreign immigrants to our workforce in the coming years, don't we have enough competition for the few jobs available now?
