World update: Thailand's political turmoil intensifies

An update from London on some of the international stories we expect to develop on Friday:

Thailand protests - There is concern on the streets of Bangkok that confrontations are sliding towards civil war. One person was killed and dozens injured on Thursday in a series of explosions, some of them near government protesters.

Iceland volcano – Iceland will close two major airports for the first time since ash from an Icelandic volcano forced the shutdown of airspace and stranded thousands of passengers around the world.

Government collapses - Belgium's government collapsed on Thursday when a coalition party pulled out amid tensions between French and Dutch-speaking factions.  Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme has offered to resign, but the Belgian king has not yet accepted the prime minister's offer.

Election debate – Gordon Brown went on the offensive against the two men hoping to replace him as prime minister in Britain’s election debate on world affairs, but analysts said it seemed to have done him little good.
