Oil leaking from site of sunken rig, Coast Guard says

Oil began leaking Saturday from the site of an oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Initial reports indicate "there are breaks in the line" where the Deepwater Horizon was drilling when it exploded Tuesday night, Coast Guard Petty Officer Erik Swanson said.

Oil is leaking at a rate of 1,000 barrels a day, he said.

The leak reported Saturday is separate from a 1-by-12 mile slick generated after the disabled rig sank Thursday.

Rescuers on Friday suspended the search for the 11 people missing in the explosion, the Coast Guard said.

The rig - a mobile unit that moves to different locations in the Gulf of Mexico - was about 52 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana, when the explosion occurred Tuesday night.

The rig had been drilling for oil in its current location since January, said Eileen Angelico, a spokeswoman for Minerals Management Service.

- CNN's Greg Morrison contributed to this report.

Florida residents should pay attention! We have received serveral comments about how "safe" deep water drilling is going to be when the oil companies position drilling rigs near Florida shores. I think they said don't worry there will not be spills! Ops!

I find it hard to believe that no one – not even CNN – got film of the actual sinking.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason we don't want off shore drilling of oil and should never have raised the quarter of a century embargo on this. Bla Bla Bla,more jobs, more oil. How about having invested the 1 trillion dollars spent on the war in Iraq the last 8 years on alternative energy development, then we wouldn't be so interested in the Middle East and in protecting our "national interests". More importantly, think of how disinterested the Islamic terrorists would have been with us if we hadn't propped up corrupt leaders and meddled in their affairs for the last 40 years. Interesting that Canada produces all its own oil and never a brow is raised by jihadists in their direction. Corporate oil wins the day!

Well, I guess gas will skyrocket now, more than it has. Also, now you republicans can see the hazards of drilling offshore. 1000 barrels a day wasted and not including the number of sea creatures that will die because of the leak.

    See,
To all those arrogantly certain drilling for oil is safe.
Alternate forms of energy are essential and must be at the forefront
of business and technology. The Reagan admin and congress of the 80s
stonewalled all progress back in the day thanks to big oil. Now it's time we moved
forward already. Cellphones and Entertainment cannot be the only place real progress is happening.

yeah some people were going around sayin their imprisoning people but for their safety .. they werent law enforcement but said that people needed to be corrected and only they could do correcting(not law enforcement) and imprisoning people...said to just accept it too...said it was because of other people some sick shit... oops, tell them they said they had the best process too it was the law court of, would it make sense in their eyes?
said they did it because how the world works and their not a little kid keep in mind their not part of law enf concept... so wouldnt even the law enf people themselves look at them to be sociopathic?
you say hey i want your opinion on something regarding law enforcement, say in our world today where law enforcement exists some people
not part of the authority were going around saying they're imprisoning for safety and because of families and how the world works and they couldn't stop
or they had to correct them, keep in mind not part of law enforcement but in our world today... oh and said it's cause they are better at it but do
identify it as false otherwise wouldn't be able to tell the difference if it was false or not... would they sound like some schitzos?? they imprison because of families but NOT using authority concepts , and because 'it works' they said so if somebody was going around saying they needed to correct u basically,

This makes you wonder what kind of safeguards are possible for off shore drilling in the gulf.
