Bullfighter in intensive care after severe goring

One of Spain's most famous matadors was in stable condition in intensive care Sunday, a day after being severely gored during a bullfight in Mexico, Spain's official news agency reported.

Video from the bullfight at central Mexico's Plaza de Aguascalientes shows Jose Tomas being carried out of the ring, his left thigh soaked in blood after the bull he was fighting upended him and tossed him several feet.

Tomas required reconstructive surgery to his femoral artery and vein after the bull's horns tore through his leg, the EFE news agency reported.

"[Tomas] remains sedated, is on ventilation, and is stable in the ICU of the hospital to which he was admitted [in Mexico]," his medical team said Sunday, according to EFE.

EFE said Tomas' condition "is very delicate, though he no longer fears for his life."

- CNN's Esprit Smith contributed to this report.

I'm sorry, but I feel no sympathy for this matador. I always root for the animal. This is a blood sport that should have been outlawed 100 years ago

So why'd they intervene? Shouldn't it be an all out one on one to the death? Never seen them rush in to pull the bull out due to injuries. He didn't even lose with any dignity.

This sport will never end unless every bullfighter dies in the ring. Then the younger generation will be afraid to become matadors because they will meet certain death.
    I hope he dies

Why was the guy a bullfighter in the first place? He could of picked a simple career but he decided to be a matador.
You can't blame the bull because they were committing animal abuse.
But you'd think after a while that he wouldn't have that happen to him if he was so great.

I hope they cut off Mr. Tomas' testicles and made "land oysters" out of them. Yummy!

wow, it seems way too many of you are worried about that this is animal mistreatment. Get over it, its tradition, and they're not mistreating them. Traditions like this have been around for hundreds of years. I think that the guy took the chance in going into the ring with the bull... so be it!

I looked for statistics on how many bullfighters have died in Spanish bullfighting, and could find 2 deaths in the last 60 years. Thats versus probably over a million bulls. So I wouldn't exactly call this a dangerous sport.

Also, bulls are blinded (with vaseline), disoriented (stuck in dark pens for days before the fight, have wet newspapers stuck in their ears, often given drugged, injured (have pins stuck in their genitals, have swords and daggers stuck in their bodies), before a bullfighter actually faces the bull. Hey, Mr. Matador, what a big man you are! woah, how tough......NOT!!! But hey, there's that 1 in a million chance you might die...guess you're a big man for getting in a car too, the chances of a fatal accident are much higher...
