Aliens probably no friends of yours, Hawking says

Think you'd like to see aliens make contact with Earth?  Stephen Hawking might get you to think again.

Aliens, the way he sees it, might be traveling the cosmos right now - not for exploration's sake but because they've run out of resources at home.

And if they're flying around looking for resources, guess what their intentions would be if they see Earth?

The British physicist advances his thoughts on aliens in his new Discovery Channel series, "Into the Universe With Stephen Hawking," which began airing Sunday.

In a video clip on Discovery Channel's website, Hawking imagines that aliens might have the technology to harness energy from whatever star they're near. The process, he proposes, could open a wormhole that could let them travel large distances - perhaps to here.

The clip shows spacecraft leaving a wormhole and approaching Earth as ominous music plays.

"Like us, they would probably have evolved from a species used to exploiting whatever it can," a narrator says.

Hawking's warning contrasts with the excitement some are showing about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Just last week, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) said it was releasing its data to astronomers and researchers all over the world, hoping more people would join the search.

Hawking's series on the Discovery Channel continues this coming Sunday at 9 p.m.  ET.

@Darrelle. What makes you think Hawking is saying this is going to happen right now? He is merely stating that if Aliens ever do come to our planet, it would likely be for resources. It is the media who has intertwined Hawkings theory with the present, just to make the article more interesting to the average reader.

I wonder what resources the alients could possibly extract from planet earth? Could George Carlin be right ...plastic!

First ask, what would humans do? We would go to another's planet and destroy them. So, most likely aliens would do the same to us. We can't defend our planet. We are much too busy fighting ourselves.

It is amazing how many brilliant people are out there to counter the opinions of Steven Hawkings. I can now rest assured that time travel and resource dependence will be solved within days.

I love how everyone in here makes the assumption that these Aliens would be similar to us or even smarter then us solely based on the fact that they can travel vast distances through space. What if aliens resemble a swarm of Locust, simply traveling the galaxy looking for the next place to eat and lay eggs. A roach "conquered" flight long before us humans did, but I wouldn't go so far as to call one more intelligent then I. There may be some species out there in the cosmos that can travel these vast distances simply as a matter of course, not a matter of their "advanced" abilities.

There are no alies. The UFO's and the "green men" that some have seen are simply demonic deceptions. They're demons, trying to delude us. Many researchers have come to this conclusion.

The entire universal life system is based on kill or be killed, eat or be eaten. All the McDonald's we eat is going to benefit the Aliens. Not only will we be fat and plump, but also too slow and lazy to fight back. Yes, they will come for resources alright. Food. Us. 10+ billion people is a lot of fresh meat.

  9. Google will rule the world

Over the years from every alien movie we have seen the aliens are some advanced race of creatures with super inteligence, how do we know there not as dumb as us how do we know that they have even discovered how to put a ship into space we just believe that because we see it on tv and 98% of the human population believes what they see on tv

With all the evidence Stephen Hawkings cannot figure out there is a God, but will no evidence he thinks there is aliens. It seems after all he is not that intelligent....

The greatest theoretical physicist since Newton may have his limitations. Aliens are here right now!, their existence can't be verified by our magnetic and electrical means! By the way, every body on earth can experience a time-space continuum by looking at the stars! Because time billions of years ago reaches us in a fraction of a second!!

The genocidal Columbus would be proud to know that alliens would follow on his steps. But then again this is Genocidal european thinking comimg from Hawkings...they destroyed and plundered the new continent and the natives, not everyone thinks likes the genocidal european...a lot of group think here...maybe the alliens would just get rid of european people, which it would be poetic justice for the natives 🙂 wouldn't it?

If you look at human history, when have we every been the benevolent teachers of newly discovered lands? Don't the explorerers usually oppress the natives, plunder and otherwise take over the newly explored lands? What makes us think things would be any different on a larger scale?

Not to different from the conquest of the new world. If one looks at Boats as ships, and the new continents as other worlds, one could easily project the outcome.

  15. Ian (Save the Aliens from Man)

With our record when it comes to aliens, they would be more worried about their own safety and avoid us altogether. We have a track record of going to other countries, let alone planets and removing the people who live there (for their own good of course). Aliens I guess will be just pleased we can't reach their planet, as they wouldn't have the same language, culture or religion and man would want to show them the errors of their ways. God help them!
