Girl stung by venomous box jellyfish 'shouldn't be alive'

A biologist researches the lethal nature of the box jellyfish.

To call 10-year-old Rachel Shardlow a survivor is an understatement.

In December, the girl tangled with a box jellyfish, one of the world's most venomous creatures, in the Calliope River near Gladstone, Australia.

"Usually when you see people who have been stung by box jellyfish with that number of the tentacle contacts on their body, it's usually in a morgue," Jamie Seymour, a zoology and tropical ecology associate professor at James Cook University told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The creature didn't just sting the girl. It enveloped her: Its tentacles wrapped around her limbs and wouldn't let go. She couldn't see or breathe. The creature, which is capable of killing an adult in four minutes, wrapped its tentacles tighter and knocked her unconscious.

"I don't know of anybody in the entire literature where we've studied this where someone has had such an extensive sting that has survived," Seymour told ABC. "When I first saw the pictures of the injuries I just went, 'you know to be honest, this kid should not be alive'. I mean they are horrific."

After several weeks in the hospital Shardlow is still feeling the effects - but the fact she is feeling anything at all - let alone doing as well as she is baffles Seymour. For now, besides scarring and memory loss, she is doing well, her family told ABC.

ABC: Young stinger victim speaks out

There have been others who have survived being stung by the deadly jellyfish, but Seymour said many of them are stung quickly, but not to the extent Shardlow was and with as many tentacles wrapped around them, Seymour said.

Seymour and other Queensland researchers received a $40,000 grant to investigate just how lethal is the venom of Irukandji and its relative box jellyfish. They will also look for treatments to help those like Shardlow who are stung by them.

The jellyfish, found often in the Great Barrier Reef, can have as many as 15 tentacles on each corner of its bodies with nearly 5,000 stinging cells, according to a guide to sea creatures posted on the Great Barrier Reef site.

It always amazes me how those who claim to not believe in God can have so much anger and feelings about something they say don't exist. If you don't believe in something there should be no emotions associated with it. Those of you that are so angered by those who have faith better be careful, you might just end up believing yourself.

Best wishes to the girl and her family.

    Barry;

I'll rise to your challenge here. I am a free thinking believer. I am very grounded in both science and faith. I also believe it is the right of every man and woman to have and exercise free will. I believe this is a God given right to every human on this planet. You say that for us believers to tell a non-believer that they are going to hell is mean? Really? If you don't know that fire burns and I tell you that if you stick your hand into an open fire it will burn, is that mean? If I warn you of a consequence for your actions, is it ever mean? I don't think so and I will never stop loving my fellow humans enough to not tell them that the cosequence for non-belief in God and non-acceptance of Jesus Christ as your only way to a wonderful eternity is a very painful eternity. I will also not interfere with your right to not belief. As I said, it is your right. You are fee to choose. Good luck and may God bless you.

  4. You serious?

Wow. Christians out in force. It's like the crusades up here.

Alright. I'll bite. So, if your God, yaweh, whatever, is so great and all.. why did christians usurp holidays from the pagans they murdered and converted? Easter- spring fertility celebrations, Christmas- yule, etc, etc. The list goes on. The holidays you celebrate were created long before your religion and were there to honor other Gods. Funny, eh?

You all are just idiots. One mention of God and you all jump on him. What happened to Glad to hear the girl is okay???? Or may she get better and return to a happy healthy child???? You all are a bunch of idiots. you don't care about the girl and what she is going through! You have to start a debate on God verses science verses what ever! To those of you who gave happy wishes to the girl and her family great job, to the rest give it a rest!

TO THE CHILD AND HER FAMILY: I DO WISH YOU THE BEST. IT IS A LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY.

  8. Don'tget mad

It's funny how people get so worked up about God being even mentioned. This was clearly a miracle. If you truly beleive there is no God, you better be right..for the rest of us, we have nothing to lose, especially not our tempers at the mere mention of His Holy Name. Get over it.

  9. You serious?

Bruno: non-believers don't enjoy life? That's like saying all priests can keep their hands to themselves.

It's also like saying all christians are too full of dogma to think for themselves. Wait.. hrm..

wHAT I FIND MOST INTERESTING WHILE READING THESE COMMENTS IS THIS, ONE PERSON MADE A COMMENT ABOUT THEIR BELIEF IN GOD'S POWER AND ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD GOT OFFENDED. THEY EXPRESSED WHAT THEY BELIEVE WAS GOD'S POWER WORKING FOR THE LIFE OF THIS CHILD AND MANY OF YOU INSTEAD OF WISHING THIS CHILD A SPEEDY RECOVERY, MOST OF YOU JUMPED INTO ACTION TRYING TO PROVE THAT HER BELIEFS WERE INSANE BECAUSE YOUR BELIEF IN SCIENCE WAS CORRECT.

THAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE WHO DON'T REALLY BELIEVE IN ANYTHING, THEY SPEND THEIR TIME TRYING TO CONVINCE OTHER PEOPLE THAT THEIR BELIEFS ARE INCORRECT.

iN CASE YOU ARE CURIOUS, YES i BELIEVE IN GOD AND i ACKNOWLEDGE HIM EVERYDAY, YOU SEE JUST IN CASE MY BELIEFS ARE CORRECT, I AM GOING TO BE THANKFUL AT THE END OF MY LIFE THAT i DID. WHAT WOULD YOU BE THANKFUL FOR IF HE DOES EXIST?

I WISH A SPEEDY RECOVERY TO THE LITTLE GIRL IN THIS STORY.

CM: you misunderstand the meaning of the word "faith". The natural selection and evolution hypotheses have withstood countless tests, conducted under the highest levels of scientific rigor. This strengthens the theory. Religion, on the other hand, is not falsifiable, which means there is no way to test it. If there is no way to test it then it is solely in the domain of faith...or some would say make-believe. For (an admittedly small) example, there is not a lick of evidence that life spontaneously erupted 5000 to 6000 years ago (as in your book of genesis) while the collection of evidence, across multiple scientific disciplines, in support of evolution is sufficient to classify this "theory" as fact...kind of like gravity.

  15. You serious?

Would I be thankful if your God exists? No. I'd throttle him for all the pain, suffering, murder, rape, and torture that "He" had committed in his name. Worship and be thankful to that? Never.
