Napolitano: 'Deep concerns' with Arizona immigration law

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Tuesday that she has "deep concerns" with a new Arizona law designed to crack down on illegal immigration.

Napolitano, who noted that the Justice Department is currently reviewing the measure, said she feared it would siphon away resources that would otherwise be used to pursue individuals who commit major crimes while in the country illegally.

Napolitano, who served as Arizona's governor before joining President Barack Obama's Cabinet, made her remarks during an appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Her remarks were her first public comments on the controversial measure.

DON'T TRY TO PUT THAT AMNESTY FOR THESE AND THEN ^ CONCENTRATE ON THE BORDER) THE REAL SITUATION IS THIS IS THE 3RD TIME AMERICA HAS PROPOSED AMNESTY FOR THOSE MILLIONS HERE ILLEGALY AND IF WE DID IT AGAIN OUR KIDS WOULD HAVE THE ILLEGALS CHILDREN COMPETING FOR THE FEWER AND FEWER JOBS AVAILABLE. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE AND AMERICANS WANT THEM OUT.

Wow – this nation is so screwed. I read all the comments and the blinding ignorance of the majority of folks is just stunning. It appears that just having a keyboard and basic typing skills give you the wisdom of the ages. So many posters remind me of how some of the most racist folk I ever met in the deep South would never use the "N" world. They would smile demurely and refer to the "colored folk" It wasn't the actual works they spoke – but you got the point. All these posters are almost universal in thier hatred of Mexicans. They see the way drugs and crime have ruined thier state and "blame the Mexicans" rather than looking in the mirror and accepting responsibility for thier faults. THEY take the drugs that flow over our border. They create an environment that encourages gangs to multiply. Stop blaming everyone else in the world for YOUR self caused problems.

I have defended you many many times Mr. President. I know you care I can see it and I feel it greatly. It seems you roll like I always imagined anyone lucky enough to go to Washingto to represent the People would be Humbled and excited to do the peoples bidding and always doing the right thing. In Spikes way! Man you really have blown me away. Your so on it with everything. So I know you think you are making the right decision by alowing 20 million (thats what I see) people to gain legal access by skirting the system. Your wrong on this one. You think there integrated and it will be absorbed. Your right about that. My children will be competing with the children of the Illegals for the few jobs left in a new economy that will never come close to having half the jobs than there are people searching. On a resource standpoint its a catastophe. The clock is ticking on waste and we certainly don't need to add to it. YOU may think that you are right in your conclusions about this Mexican Invasian. BUT AMERICANS WANT THEM GONE. You see you have been flying high since you first started in state govnmnt but down here on the GROUND we can feel how bad the senario of committing 20 million soon to be 100 million COMPETING HUMANS into what we have to deal with down here. I don't know wether you think you should do what you think is right or what all of your constituents DEMAND. Please don't change the dynamic of our society we are still learning to be color blind and you want to put this onto us? Look, if Mexico wants to talk about joining our union FINE Lets talk. But if they want to keep there BORDERS and stature then FINE but that means keeping our BORDERS!!!!!!! MAN YOUR A MONDERN DAY MASIAH TO ME. But if you give all these JOB STEALING RESOURCE STEALING COMMUNITY CRUSHING TRESPASSERS AMNESTY, Then your not with americans your with Illegals. We don't want Hispanics out. Hell if I was in there possition I would sneak in too. Thats the problem we cannot handle this INVASIAN any longer. And in the new economy we would all like any of the JOBS these ILLEGALS are doing. The statistics that are being thrown around about jobs is wrong. THERE are NO JOBS and its only going to get worse. PLEASE PLEASE WAKE UP!!!!!!!! You see your health care bill was like 50 50 but if you read anywhere on this topic 90% of AMERICA is SAYING PLEASE DON'T DO THIS TO US. We need those JOBS and RESOURCES and COMMUNITY SPACE for Americans and those who will come in the future. Please if you want to help america then help AMERICANS. NOT ILLEGAL COMPETING TRESPASSERS. kodiakgrizzly911@hotmail.com

I just enjoyed reading all the people's comments who called Obama and Napolitano idiots because almost every single one of them has spelling and grammar mistakes. If you're going to take a stand on the side of the devil, it would be more convincing if you yourself were not an idiot.
I wish Obama would give Janet back to Arizona. I agree with his appointment, but the person who took her place is trying to screw up the entire country.
This law does nothing more than legalize racial profiling. I work with children of undocumented immigrants and it shocks me to no end that all you people see them as "illegal." Someone said that they "are a major crime." These people are people, their existence is not illegal, these children should not be made to pay for the desperation of their parents. The people who come to this country without papers do so mainly so that they can have a better opportunity than what is available to them in their own country. Whether that is Mexico or England or Australia makes no difference. America has long advertised itself as a land of opportunity, we were founded by immigrants who wanted a better opportunity than they had elsewhere. As someone else commented, the United States belongs to the world, we have always and will always be the place that people want to be. If this law is allowed to remain in effect, millions of lives will be detrimentally affected: lives of Americans, naturalized citizens, documented immigrants, undocumented immigrants, and their families and friends. We are all connected somehow, you cannot deny the effects that this law will have.
And to all of you who have said that this law is so wonderful because it will give jobs back to hardworking Americans. When was the last time there was a line of "hardworking Americans" waiting to apply for the jobs that immigrants stereotypically fill? Your arrogance is astounding.

To Megan Luna: What a brilliant post. All people share the same hopes and dreams no matter the color of thier skin or the language they speak. Sadly our nation has become one that is best known for it's ignorance and vitriol. It's quite true about "hardworking Americans" waiting to apply for those jobs. Would they tolerate working 16 hour days for way less than minimun wage? Would they tolerate workplace practices that were declared illegal in the early 1900's? Places like Arizona quite literally have been built (especially in the past 20 years) on the backs of undocumented workers. From the fancy new subdivisions to the way below fair market prices for food and services, they have benefited from legalized slave labor. Now with a bad economy and drug/gang violence on the rise they need an easy scapegoat. Bad legislation only creates more problems...

Amazing how America seems to have reverted back to the "Red Scare" Days and to the early 20th century when European immigrants where scapegoated by the majority of the population. Scary

I applaud Arizona for finally doing something that our stupid federal government did not have the backbone to do. Illegals are stealing our jobs, conducts most crimes, and pushed our health care in the mud so bad that Obama had to sign a outragous health care bill that will hurt our children and their children because they will be the ones to pay for it.

Please applaud Arizona. Our spineless governor here in Texas would have enough guts to it.

I thought after 9/11, George Bush announced that he was going to secure the nation's borders. What? Arizona didn't count? Why are we still dealing with unsecure borders 9 yaers later? Oh, I forgot. We were too busy looking for weapons of mass distruction in Iraq to spend time or money building a GOOD fence and patrolling our borders! Until the U.S. secures our southern border with mexico COMPLETELY, immigration reform is a joke. As fast as we deport them under whatever pretext is used, our mexican neighbors are going to keep coming in. Because the gate has been left OPEN! The best long term solution is to annex Mexico, just think of all of the new beachfront condos developers could build. And get cheap labor to do it! Us yankees will be going south to the new florida as fast as the mexicans are heading north and before you know it, we'll have a totally integrated country, not to mention, plenty of mexican oil! Gee, Why didn't George Bush think of this! Mexico would've been alot easier to subdue than Iraq. Hell, everybody wants to leave anyway!

The Feds are concerned that Arizona has called their bluff. The folks who are arrested may wind up in Federal custody – and the Feds will have to pick up the tab. Until it gets down to the dollars, the D.C. government only has a political interest, having passed the buck to Arizona and other border states. Well, passed the bill, anyway.
I just cannot reason how any government official who has taken an oath can ignore anything illegal. As a taxpayer, I want a refund until ALL of our laws are enforced. Those that don't like the law have legal ways to change the laws. Become a citizen, and vote.
This was already discussed completely in Philadelphia about 200 years ago. Hell,
I think they even wrote it all down somewhere....

I totally agree with Scott Phillips, Queen Creek, AZ. You can't inforce a law based solely race. I mean that is what Nazy Germany tried to do back in 1936. Imagine if each government in the world would pass the same law, or for that matter Mexico and all people looking like "white americans" woud be stoped. But I have an idea. What if the government of AZ would give opportunity to all illegal immigrants working and living in AZ to legalise their situation. This is not the solution to fight the drug cartels of Mexico.

How hypocritical some people can become when it is a known fact that most of them would much rather hire an illegal alien to mown their lawn and cleaning those dirty toilets because of cheap labor. Plus, some of them may feel undignified to be employed in those types of work.

    Who are kidding?

Scott Phillips – It's people like you who have no clue as to what is going on in Arizona, just keep reading the propoganda BS. "you cannot stop someone because of race, as the law says. Only after you have been stopped for something can they start questioning your status. Read before you open your mouth – Tom in Tucson
