Authorities: Ariz. deputy shot by suspected drug traffickers

[Updated at 11:00 p.m.] A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona was shot Friday afternoon by a suspected drug trafficker, authorities said.

The Pinal County deputy, who was not immediately identified, contacted authorities after being wounded in the desert, saying he had been shot by an illegal immigrant with an AK-47, said Lt. Tammy Villar, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

[Posted at 9:05 p.m.] A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona who was shot Friday afternoon by an alleged illegal immigrant has been found after authorities lost contact with him, according to CNN affiliate KPNX.

The report came from a KPNX reporter on board a chopper at the scene.

[Posted at 8:41 p.m.] A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona was shot Friday afternoon by a member of an alleged group of illegal immigrants, authorities said.

The Pinal County deputy, who was not immediately identified, contacted authorities after being wounded in a remote area, said Lt. Tammy Villar, a sheriff's spokeswoman. She said authorities believe he was shot with a AK-47. The deputy was being treated for the wound, but his condition was not immediately known, Villar said.

Pinal County is located between Phoenix and Tuscon and has been described as a key transit point for illegal immigrants. Sheriff Paul Babeu told CNN that an estimated 80 percent of illegal immigrants eventually pass through his county along the way to other locations.

Deputies in the department routinely patrol for illegal immigrants and smugglers, and it's not uncommon for them to be in the field alone, officials said.

It was not immediately clear what led the deputy to engage with the group on Friday.

The bottom line in all this is that the borders need to be secured, period. I remember in 1986 we had amnesty and the borders were suppose to be secured. Here we are 24 years later and 15 million more wanting amnesty and yet the borders are still not secure. Even as I write this another couple hundred are probably crossing. Only now the liilegals are demanding amnesty while the legit citizens must be silent or called racists. This whole country is racists as far as that goes; every ethnicity wants to get over on the other. Sad isn't it; what ever happened to make love not war......ha.

Do you think there is a difference between an illegal immigrant and a smuggler? Let us suppose that there is. Suppose the difference is that an illegal immigrant entered the United States to find work, and has no need to resort to violence. And suppose a smuggler came to the United States to continue a drug-trafficking operation which is run by powerful cartels in South America. A smuggler, on the other hand, does have a need to resort to violence sometimes. This is because "[drug] prohibition drives the drug market underground. This means buyers and sellers cannot resolve their disputes with lawsuits, arbitration or advertising, so they resort to violence instead" (Harvard economist, Jeffrey Miron, http://edition.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/03/24/miron.legalization.drugs/index.html)

If drugs were made legal in the United States, the profit motive for these cartels to engage in drug-trafficking and illegally crossing the border would cease to exist. If drugs were regulated and treated similarly to alcohol and tobacco–two other dangerous drugs–there would be a massive decline in the number of smugglers entering the United States with the intent to sell illegal drugs. As a result, nonviolent illegal immigrants would be the extent of our illegal immigration problem.

    Just a thought.

Why is it that when citizens just want people, of all colors and backgrounds, to FOLLOW and OBEY THE LAW, suddenly there are all these wise cracks about white people?! Do minorities feel that following the law is for white people only? Maybe you're not Latino enough, Black enough, Muslim enough, _______ (enter group on line) enough if you are a law abiding citizen?!

I am a white Irish-American who is blessed enough to have friends from all these backgrounds and more. Even they don't quite understand why people don't want to obey the law. They are hard working, law abiding people who are outstanding Americans and human beings (One of them emigrated from Nigeria legally and is now a legalized American and a close friend of mine.)

When the ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT supporters run out of valid arguments as to why ILLEGAL BORDER CROSSING is OK, they turn to the race card! Hate to tell you this but it only really worked for OJ Simpson... give us all a break and come up with an intelligent argument... PLEASE!!!!

Sam #225 the colonization of "The New World" caused the largest extinction of humanity in the history of the world. Over 90,000,000 died mostly of disease. Why of all the things to say you bring up that. It is and was wrong to do this to Indigenous People!!! What have we learned since 1492 ?????????????? Well I will say a lot. We may not be civilized as we should be ,..but justice is the balance the center between right and wrong ; the place where the opposing sides agree. We have laws to follow. I can go to the Ellis Island Immigrant web site and get my Grandfathers Papers from 1910 and he is from Yemen. I really believe Mexico and Mexicans dont care about bettering their own country, educating their own children and bettering their own population. It is too easy to run across the border isn't it?

232, maybe that isn't a bad idea. Then all the crack-heads will hopefully OD and we won't have to support them anymore.

THERE'S A PETITION TO PASS THIS BILL YOU SHOULD DEMAND YOUR REPPRESENTATIVE AND SENATORS TO PASS IT OR YOU WILL VOTE THEM OUT IN NOVEMBER: H.R.1868 – Birthright Citizenship Act of 2009 – This bill would eliminate birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants in the U.S. Current U.S. law automatically recognizes any person born on American soil as a natural born citizen. Under the bill, only children with at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen, a legal permanent resident, or an undocumented immigrant serving in the military would be considered citizens. . 2. Vote out anyone who voted for giving continued benefits and jobs to illegal immigrants.

Nikki I am in texas and you are chasing your shadow ,..just because you call me ignorant does not mean your really not the ignorant person. I am well aware of the plight of these Mexicans and I sympathies with them. We have laws and if your family fought in wars for this country for our greatness, it is hard to imagine that you are Nationalistic and care about our laws. You make no sense and surely on this blog others do not agree with you as well. Keep on chasing your shadow you are one who has not learned anything as to why Arizona did what they had to do.This incident is just a new reminder of an existing problem
