Authorities: Ariz. deputy shot by suspected drug traffickers

[Updated at 11:00 p.m.] A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona was shot Friday afternoon by a suspected drug trafficker, authorities said.

The Pinal County deputy, who was not immediately identified, contacted authorities after being wounded in the desert, saying he had been shot by an illegal immigrant with an AK-47, said Lt. Tammy Villar, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

[Posted at 9:05 p.m.] A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona who was shot Friday afternoon by an alleged illegal immigrant has been found after authorities lost contact with him, according to CNN affiliate KPNX.

The report came from a KPNX reporter on board a chopper at the scene.

[Posted at 8:41 p.m.] A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona was shot Friday afternoon by a member of an alleged group of illegal immigrants, authorities said.

The Pinal County deputy, who was not immediately identified, contacted authorities after being wounded in a remote area, said Lt. Tammy Villar, a sheriff's spokeswoman. She said authorities believe he was shot with a AK-47. The deputy was being treated for the wound, but his condition was not immediately known, Villar said.

Pinal County is located between Phoenix and Tuscon and has been described as a key transit point for illegal immigrants. Sheriff Paul Babeu told CNN that an estimated 80 percent of illegal immigrants eventually pass through his county along the way to other locations.

Deputies in the department routinely patrol for illegal immigrants and smugglers, and it's not uncommon for them to be in the field alone, officials said.

It was not immediately clear what led the deputy to engage with the group on Friday.

The first thing that crossed my mind after reading this is that the male is possibly a gang banger. How did they determine he's an illegal immigrant when they haven't caught the suspect yet? This goes and proves that the immigration law does introduce racial profiling.

the title of this article is clearly ignorant. the individual with the AK-47 is not trying to cross the border looking for work he is clearly a drug smuggler. don't confuse immigrants with drug smugglers!!! any body who says all immigrants are smugglers are clearly racists.

Illegal white people aren't the problem, illegal Mexicans are. Statistics reinforce that fact.

This happens all the time!! CNN ran story last night about the rancher that got shot & killed. & they ran some video of the areas where these people cross the boarder on the guys land. & they showed a bush in the video there that had girls panties hanging it. They do that when they rape the girls they are bring over. & they hang the panties to show it. These are not nice people down there. They are not the little guys most of us see cutting grass. They are robbing, raping & killing people. And AZ is doing what is has to do to protect their people. What happened to fence? What happened to the nation guard patrolling the borders? All OUR government is doing is threaten to take action against AZ for trying to protect their people.

The area is a remote place where illegals come into this country often. Not a place where people usually are.

I know how much Republicans like "common sense," so here's some: migrant workers don't own AK-47s.

let me give you a little history lesson to all you people who keeps repeating the same old rhetoric "illegal is illegal. all illegals are criminals. what part of illegal do you not understand?"

disobeying white masters as a slave was ILLEGAL in the US at one point. lynching and hanging black people because they disobeyed their slave owners was LEGAL in the US at one point. trying to get service in areas not designated "colored only" was ILLEGAL in the US at one point. being japanese was considered ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS in the US one point and thousands were herded to internment camps.

it's not always about what is legal and what is not in plain black and white terms. it's about the spirit of the law. current immigration laws are broken and that is why they are not enforceable. this law coming out of arizona may not be clearly violating any provision of the constitution, but its the spirit of the law that stinks of deep rooted hatred and xenophobic nativism.

Ok so I think that really does it. Immigrants just sealed their fate. Kill'em all if they try to come into this country ILLEGALY.

I have no problems with Mexicans who want to come into the US, BY FOLLOWING THE RULES!

An example if you will< If someone breaks into your house, do they now live there?
No, they don't. If an illegal sneaks over the border, do they now live in the US.....

    Same answer folks, same answer

Amazing that people in here think this is either made up or militia. The officer is alive and reported back that he had contact with a group of suspected illegals before he got shot. Drug smugglers are always well armed. Go to azcentral to follow the updates. It's all over the local news here in Phoenix of course. These are the same illegals that roam the streets as they tend to their stash houses.

I am so POd at this article and the earlier one about the ranger being murdered by "illegal immigrant drug smugglers". Most like this and the previous attack were carried out by hard core drug cartels or cayotes. Why oh why would CNN be trying so hard, twice in one day, to associate this violence with the illegals who just want to work to better their lives???

This article is so EXPLOSIVE. People aren't going care that it never mentioned why or how they were suspected of being illegal immigrants. They are just going to remember ARIZONA DEPUTY SHOT BY UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS, "AUTHORITIES" SAY. THIS JUST IN. CNN.

CNN should know better. Just read the comments of "Michelle" just above to see the fury that this reckless indifference spawns..
