NYC police: Man with cyanide, flares arrested in subway

[Updated at 2:05 p.m.] "This was not part of a terrorist attack," said Deputy Commissioner of Police Paul Browne. "He wanted to find a place in the tunnel where no one would find a body."

Subway workers saw the man walking on the tracks between Brooklyn's Borough Hall station and the Bowling Green station in Manhattan at 5:30 a.m. ET, Cavitolo said. They called police when they realized he was not an employee.

The man was carrying flares, water bottles, and a one-quart canister that contained sodium cyanide, he said.

Investigators believe he planned to drink the cyanide to kill himself, he said.

Browne said subway passengers were never in danger.

"Sodium cyanide does not have explosive capability, but is extremely toxic, especially when mixed with water," he said.

The man had no contact with  passengers, he added.

[Posted at 12;15 p.m.] New York Police arrested a college student who they say carried cyanide and flares into a Manhattan subway Friday morning.

The 20-year-old man, who was wearing a fake transit system vest, told police he planned to kill himself, New York Police Detective Joseph Cavitolo said.

- CNN's Susan Candiotti, Hussein Saddique and Chris Kokenes contributed to this report.

Yeah and the new stories are recycled over and over again by the different commentators. Seems like they could each present original work to make the news day interesting. I listen to CNN while doing things around the house and over a couple hours, you'll hear the same story over and over.

My guess is that this person was indeed trying to kill others with the cyanide and when he got caught he simply said he wanted to only kill himself.

Ben – Hope your loved one isn't the one killed by the speeder who is speeding just because he/she could knowing that ALL the police are just concertrating on looking for terrorists and gang members. Please! Freedom doesn't mean do what you want anytime to anyone you want; say anything you want to anyone anytime you want'; take anything anytime you want from anyone. Teens sending naked pictures don't bother you? You are scary and just the kind of individual who needs to be watched!

Clearly this is baloney. Some sort of suicide attack it may have been, but likely the guy was of the wrong religion so it isn't being described as terrorism.

It was a suicide attempt. I ride through Jay Street-Borough Hall every day on the F train and I didn't hear a thing about this. If it was an attack everyone would know with in minutes. As to all the other comments on here... thanks for the wild speculation live from Kansas...

Just finished reading all the posts. We have more to fear from people like these posters than anything else in the world. These knuckle dragging, mouth breathers are a real menace to security just by their very being alive. Track them down – give them the poison.
Kool-aid time for the rotten apple.

Hey "American" and "Joe", you so-called patriots are nothing more than knee-jerk reactionaries trying to make eveyone else as paranoid and xenphobic as you. Things are bad enough. We need Homeland Security from you guys.

He had a ONE QUART canister containing cyanide–32 ounces. Sounds a little like overkill to me, as far as it being a planned suicide attempt. It only takes a tiny amount of cyanide to kill one human being. I think he was planning on doing a little more than just killing himself.

Why are people complaining about the initial two sentence post? I would rather have CNN quickly provide that little blurb about developing news and get updates as information becomes available than not know anything until they can be sure they have the information they will ever have. If I want to confine myself to only reading complete articles, I'll buy the news printed on paper. Those publishers take their time, and let you know that something had happened a while ago. Thank you CNN, for getting the news out as fast as possible.
