Two quakes reported in the Bering Sea

Two earthquakes occurred in the Bering Sea Friday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The first was magnitude 6.3 and the second was 6.0.

The quakes were about 300 miles off of the Alaskan coast. Both quakes occurred at a depth of more than 9 miles, the USGS said.

Earthquakes are a sign of the end of times? Maybe. Or maybe we just have a 24-hour news cycle now to report on them.

As it happens, there have been a whole lot of really powerful earthquakes in the past... c.f., the magnitude 9 earthquake in Chile that killed over 25,000 in 1858... the magnitude 8.5 quake in Chile in 1751... the magnitude 8.7 quake in Chile in 1730... and so on, with major quakes roughly every 50 – 100 years in Chile for the past several hundred years. Same thing in Iran, but going much further back (800's, 700's, 600's, etc.). Same thing in Greece, too, before the time of Christ. See, there are these things called faults... and every so often when the earth is moving, physics means that certain places on faults move more than others... and that causes earthquake clusters. I would bet if we had been measuring geologic activity in the Bering Sea for the past several hundred years, we would likely find a number of quakes there per year there for awhile. Ask anyone who lives in central Alaska – minor earthquakes are the norm there.

So – they're probably not a sign of the end times. More likely a sign that the earth's crust has been shifting for most of history, and is going to keep on doing so whether we want it to or not.

Also, re: man created "this mess" meaning earthquakes – doubtful. The earth moves. It's because of physics and plate teutonics. I'm not saying global warming doesn't exist, or that we haven't caused plenty of other destruction on earth (destruction of mass numbers of species, etc.) but I think it's pretty hard to blame the earthquakes on us.

Regardless of what you believe in, the weather is gonna get worse. God or no God. science is telling us that the Earth is changing. Praying to God is not going to help us.

OMG! I got away from the comp for 5 minutes and its gone from natural disaster to religious battle! I am Christian, however, for those of you attacking those who do not believe in GOD, to do so makes you better in what way...it doesn't. So please stop using GOD's name in this argument. This blog is about the Earthquake and natural disasters. Keep the religious anger and hate to an article that its actually about. You're angry? vent. but please stop knitpicking on the innocent. Of course even I have to say tho...Can you see the wind / air you breathe? No....hence endless argument.

Like I said Davide, research the Scriptures and you're right, it is going to get worse, exactly as the Bible says it will.

I agree Davide. Everyone is so comfortable looking for someone else to fix a problem that we sit aand point the finger while nothing gets done.

For all of you skeptics of the Bible, I'm sure you've heard of the New World Order and the One World currency, well that was prophicied 2,500 years ago in the book of Daniel. The NWO will be headed by the Antichrist when the world is divided up into 10 regions and these regions are headed by 10 leaders. Look up on the internet, Club of Rome 10 regions. Also last year at the g7 summit, President Mevedev of Russia introduced a One World Currency Coin and you can look that up as well. The Antichrist will eventually do away with the worlds monetery system and he will introduce his MARK that he will demand all to take otherwise you wont be able to buy or sell without it. It is called, The Mark of the Beast 666. That is why we have all this technology today such as scanners, referring to fingerprint, hand, retnial, facil recgonition and the micro chip made by Digital Angel that is implanted into people with health issues. In the book of Revelation it says13:16-17 "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:" "And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."

Julie, if you click on the two links in the story — they're the words in blue — they will take you to the USGS report of the respective earthquake. There you can find the exact location of the earthquake two different ways.

The easiest is to click on the "Maps" tab and then zoom in on the map that interests you. One of them, the Shake Map, shows where people reported feeling the quake.

On the main tab (the one that's displayed when you click the link to the page), you can also read the latitude and longitude of the quake, which you can use to pinpoint it on any globe or map of the area.

I hope this helps. It really is best that CNN do it this way, because if the USGS reassesses its information and decides the first estimate of the quake's location was wrong, you won't read outdated information on CNN. You will get the latest word directly from the experts.

blah blah blah "J" . I for one am no skeptic but your hypocracy as to how a Godly person should show by example stinks...think you need to qoute parts that hold you as man responsible for your own actions and judgements. Plant a seed....not shove it down peoples throats. Its not your place.
