U.S. Coast Guard responding to overturned oil rig

The U.S. Coast Guard said Friday it was responding to an overturned oil rig in an inland canal near Morgan City, Louisiana.

The rig is not leaking fuel at this time, the Coast Guard said, but 500 feet of containment boom has been deployed around the rig as a precaution.

The mobile inland drilling unit overturned in the Charenton navigational canal, the Coast Guard said.

I see alot of people in here who have stated their case in an "either/or" scenario. The solution is NOT black and white. The fact is, we are going to have to ween ourselves off of oil slowly, We can start by driving more fuel efficient cars, (electric, hybrids, NG vehicles) and, conserving, recycling, etc. While we are doing this we should also be looking for more natural resources in our own country in a responsible way. Moving towards alternate fuels is good business and should not be turned into a political football by either side. Lets turn off the 24/7 news (that wants us divided $$$) and take a long hard look at what is the smart move for our future.

Alternative energy has been suppressed by the multinational corporations for decades US citizens have been lulled into a stupor by miss information by the media. Time to wake up and be counted, and turn off the damn idiot boxes.

When it rains it pours, similar to the new mine failure kiling two. Is the energy industry more dangerous than others or is it just making the news. Maybe because it happenes to groups of people in a single accident rather than one here and there. I'm just speaking of thr deaths I understand the spill being front page. God Bless the Lost and Injured !

I can't believe we still have people that refuse to accept responsibility for their mis-guided policies to stay on dirty oil, coal, etc. The same group that lives in the fanasty land that we don't have renewable sources of fuel, along with technology to support our life style...completely WITHOUT fossil fuels. They continue to stick their head in the sand, only to lift it out every now and then to yell meanless drivel like "hippy tree hugger" "granola eating yuppy lefty pinko" and names like that. The "lefties" were right about DDT, they were right about not going to Iraq, they were right about WTO and NAFTA, they were right about investing in Green Energy and getting off the oil...

One day, the paranoids like Rush Limbaugh, and the Drill NOW numb skulls will be shamed and shunned out of town.

"Sorry to have to remind some folks but fuel is NOT the only by product of oil. Using a computer, driving a car, have prescriptions, wear makeup or synthetic fabrics? ALL the plastics come from oil. medicines, road ways, grease, etc. There is NO WAY we can live outside of caves without oil."

NOT true. All of these products can and will be made without fossil fuels in the future.

We do not get cheap oil. They have a thing called price fixing by an illegal cartel that keeps the prices artificially high. US oil companies love the illegal model setup by foreigners and will do nothing to stop it. You can not compare other countries fuel prices because they have free health care added into the price of their petrol. We do not. Ours are just high gas prices.

Very likely this is something that happens more than we know and the only reason we are hearing about it is because of the current situation.

We need to focus on what BP and everyone else is doing about the damage that has been done. We need good Plan Bs for when the 'unexpected' happens. I, for one, have never hit the side wall of a bridge while crossing it in my 40 years of driving, but I would not want to drive across a bridge that did not have one (on each side.) Drilling for oil without a readily deployable safety system is not very smart. It may make short term business sense, but we see what THAT leads to.

We need the oil because we have failed to develop a Plan B for what we will do without it. We all can't sit in the dark in a cold cave and eat home grown tomatoes. But we can make plans for how our alleged civilization will be sustained in the future without any of the 'bad' energy sources that we need. The Principle of Imminent Collapse will manifest itself, but we do not need to make it SO EASY.

Look at the brighter side. You americans i.e McD, Ivars etc won't have to buy oil. All the seafood will come wrapped in oil. Thats what you like right – high fatty fried food.

Btw stop criticizing the oil companies. Accidents happen and especially what do you expect with a world of 6 billion population? You think u want to go green and everything becomes green? Just to wipe our ass, we cut down so many trees to make tissues. Stop that and start using water to clean ur ases.

People talk a lot but practice 0. All this Green the only reason why its being done is to generate jobs and dollars. nothing else

Well I live in South Louisiana, maybe we will get some help with all the coastal restoration we been asking for, for years. The hard way. We have provided oli to the nation for years, guess which state pays a premium for their share of the product? Yep, Louisiana does. Also we have had to deal with the many environmental problems of drilling, not just offshore. If you haven't ever stpped on a tar ball, nice and gooey, just under the sand on a nice sunny day at the beach, then you haven't been in LA much.
