NYC's Times Square shut down over suspicious car

Several blocks around New York's Times Square were closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic Saturday night after a police officer saw smoke emanating from a box inside a parked car, according to authorities.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told CNN that the shutdown began after a foot patrol officer passed by a Nissan Pathfinder with Connecticut plates on 45th Street between and 7th and 8th Avenues. Browne said the officer noticed a box inside the car with smoke coming out.

Browne said officials at the scene were using a robot to search inside the car. The police department's public information office said the box and other items found in the search are not confirmed at this time to be a bomb.

The Marriott Marquee Hotel wasn't allowing anyone to enter or leave the hotel Saturday night, and at least one nearby restaurant, TGI Friday's, had closed to customers and was evacuating staff.

    Really, are you not going to report something that is important to our security of our nation either domestic or internationally related to homeland security. CNN you are a huge disappointment for coverage.

    There's definitely more going on here than just "someone asleep at the wheel" – We can speculate all night about the reasons but there is some other reason CNN is not giving the story any weight right now.

    Did the management of CNN not leave any reporters in NYC. Did they all go to DC for the dinner. Very concerned and extremly disappointed in CNN

    @Aaron

    Of course...I mean Obama ordered 30 SWAT (or SWOT as some have said he may have meant) teams to the Gulf region and we have yet to really hear a reason why. CNN doesn't say anything about this short of a bloggers entry. CNN meet White House, White House meet CNN.

    CNN really let down their viewers and readers tonight. Horribly disappointed at CNN. It's one thing to blow it out of proportion ... It is an entirely different thing to not report on it at all. A one liner statement linking you to a two paragraph story is NOT reporting on the issue. CNN should be embarrased by this and hopefully learn an important lesson from the posts provided here ... We are willing to change the station and visit another website when we are let down. We may not switch back!

    I was wondering if any enemies of America (foerign or domestic) would take advantage of the oil spill and use it as a distraction for something sinister.

    CNN is a little bit slow on this incident. Is that self censorship or just being more careful on breaking news?

    I am not sure which news agency reports with more accurate information; both CBC, Reuters reports "explosive" or "failed car bomb"

    Anyway, there is heroic act done by this cop. According to a HK news agency, he found out the suspicious car with inappropriate plate. From the plate number, this type of plate was not supposed to be in this SUV parked on the Time Square

    Bomb hoax or not, we should be able to find out tomorrow...

    Is *everyone* at the correspondents dinner? I'm really shocked at CNN's shoddy performance on covering this! Larry King interviewing a fake president? Really?
