NYC's Times Square shut down over suspicious car

Several blocks around New York's Times Square were closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic Saturday night after a police officer saw smoke emanating from a box inside a parked car, according to authorities.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told CNN that the shutdown began after a foot patrol officer passed by a Nissan Pathfinder with Connecticut plates on 45th Street between and 7th and 8th Avenues. Browne said the officer noticed a box inside the car with smoke coming out.

Browne said officials at the scene were using a robot to search inside the car. The police department's public information office said the box and other items found in the search are not confirmed at this time to be a bomb.

The Marriott Marquee Hotel wasn't allowing anyone to enter or leave the hotel Saturday night, and at least one nearby restaurant, TGI Friday's, had closed to customers and was evacuating staff.

Maybe CNN is not as paranoid as ALL of you. The crazy terrorist have already beaten all of you trying to watch this story 24/7 on all networks. And yes, congrats to FOX on the lead on this apparently. Keep your fear campaign going strong.

Absolutely awful. A potential car bomb has been found in Times Square and CNN is airing Larry King Live. I really don't like being forced to watch Fox News but atleast they're covering the story.

Bulldog, it is being reported as "A vehicle was found to contain explosives, gasoline, propane and burned wires and [is] being treated as a "failed device.""
How is that not an act of terrorism? Typically the NYPD doesnt evacuate Times Square. Even when those teenagers were shooting people randomly last month and when they chased that homeless person with an automatic weapon down the street. This is pretty serious. Our local media in NY is covering it. At least on LI.

The lack of coverage of this story is baffling... I resorted to watching Times Square on Earthcam. Possible bomb in the heart of NYC? More newsworthy than rerunning Michael Moore on LKL. Just saying.

Sinnce CNN isn't covering it, here's the Times headline:

Police Find Explosives in S.U.V. in Times Square
By RAY RIVERA and KARIN HENRY 16 minutes ago

Police found what appeared to be a car bomb in a parked car on Saturday evening, leading to the evacuation of thousands of tourists and theatergoers from the area.

The reason for this lapse in reporting is simple, CNN is still trying to figure out the right angle for the rabbit ears on their obsolete analog television sets. They simply didn't get the memo. Bill Gates pays good money for this kinda 4-1-1.
