NYC's Times Square shut down over suspicious car

Several blocks around New York's Times Square were closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic Saturday night after a police officer saw smoke emanating from a box inside a parked car, according to authorities.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told CNN that the shutdown began after a foot patrol officer passed by a Nissan Pathfinder with Connecticut plates on 45th Street between and 7th and 8th Avenues. Browne said the officer noticed a box inside the car with smoke coming out.

Browne said officials at the scene were using a robot to search inside the car. The police department's public information office said the box and other items found in the search are not confirmed at this time to be a bomb.

The Marriott Marquee Hotel wasn't allowing anyone to enter or leave the hotel Saturday night, and at least one nearby restaurant, TGI Friday's, had closed to customers and was evacuating staff.

Even the Iranian newsites did a better job reporting on this than our own CNN.
CNN lately seem to just give up, there seems to be no real urgency to get a story out to the people.
Its sad to see that they have totally lost their way.
They need some more people in their ranks that will actually do what they are paid to do.

I'm very disappointed in CNN's poor coverage of this. I've been a loyal CNN viewer for a long time, but stuff like this makes me want to switch to MSNBC. Come on!

MSNBC was right on target, covering the story. Very disappointed that CNN covered the shananigans of The White House dinner then switched off to 'programmed format'. They lost big points with me tonight!

It's a sad day when you have to turn to Fox to get the latest news. I agree with the majority of posters that CNN has really fell down on the job!!!!

    Hey 32!

"I applaud CNN for not blasting this on the front page and creating unnecessary panic."

It is NOT up to a news organization to gauge reaction. It is their duty to report the news.

    Get it?

Once we heard the news re NYC, we immediately turned to CNN only to discover a Larry King repeat. Where is the coverage for this event?

Hey, CNN asleep? Your still broadcasting a LARRY KING rerun!
    Hours after the story broke.
Whos making decisions at the network?
    Everyone on vacation?
Youve lost all credibility as a news organization.
    Someone wake up Wolf!

Taken from the MSNBC front page article...

"But the New York Times reported that a federal official said the incident was not considered a terrorist threat. The Times said the vehicle was a Nissan Pathfinder parked on 45th Street just west of Seventh Avenue."

A bomb, in a car, next to one of the busiest places in the US on a Saturday night. Maybe it wasn't the terrorizers but damn that's a threat eh?
