Gored Spanish bullfighter released from hospital

(CNN) - Top Spanish matador Jose Tomas has been released from a Mexican hospital after being severely gored in a bullfight last weekend, Spain's official news agency reported Saturday.

Tomas was upended and tossed several feet by a bull he was fighting at central Mexico's Plaza de Aguascalientes on April 25. Video captured the near-fatal goring and the matador carried out of the ring with his left thigh soaked in blood.

On Saturday, Tomas was discharged from a hospital in Aguascalientes in west central Mexico. He personally thanked the hundreds of people in Mexico who donated blood to save his life.

"No one can feel more Mexican and more grateful" Tomas said, according to the EFE news agency.

Tomas' release comes a week after he required a blood transfusion of several liters and reconstructive surgery to his femoral artery and vein after the bull's horns tore through his leg.

Bullfighting is barbaric. "Hmmmm. . Let's see. I am going to get in a ring with a bull who is in severe pain and fighting for survival. Maybe that is not such a smart move?" The bullfighter got what he deserved, and he is being treated like a hero. Sick.

I've never been to a bull fight. I've heard that after the days fights, they slaughter the bulls and give the meat to the poor and needy people. Should we deprive poor hungry people of meat for their tables for dinner because we don't like the way the bull was killed? Maybe we should ban baseball. It doesn't kill animals but I've never heard of a poor person eating used baseballs at the end of the games! When a guy hits one out of the park we say "Boy! He sure killed that one!" But nobody ever eats it at the end of the day.

How about NOT torturing the animal? You make the argument as if the fight doesn't happen, there will be no food for the needy. There are other ways to slaughter the bull for food that are much less cruel.

They used to show bullfights from Tijuana on TV here in San Jose, CA when I was a kid. I used to watch them for morbid curiosity. Now I am older and wiser and they are horribly cruel. The fight starts out with the 'picadors', guys who sticks a lance into the bull to make it angry and to cut muscles in its neck so it can't lift it's head. Then barbed knives are plunged into the bulls back. Then the matador enters, gets the animal to chase him around until it is really tired, then plunges his sword into the bull so that as the bull thrashes in pain and anger it slices itself to death.

People in the crowds cheer and women swoon. Truly bullfighting brings out the worst in people.

If you want to compare this to baseball, you would have to kill a player and give them to the poor. Or perhaps feed bulls with them.

You do not understand the purpose or place this ancient ceremony takes in Spanish culture. It does not make Spanish poeple more "bloodthirsty", violent or angry, like your American football does. If you were to ban both of these sports, America would be all the better for it and Spain all the worse.

Compare the effect on teenagers of both countries and perhaps you will re-focus on the more important problem.

I wish that toreador a better health, but I cannot accept that stupid "sport" consisting in killing a poor bull that is guilty of nothing!!! Let them live, poor animals!! I am really dead against bullfighting. And I think it is totally normal for a toro to defend itself against the cruelty of mankind!! Good bye e hasta la vista!! Grazie mile per l'attenzione!!
