Gored Spanish bullfighter released from hospital

(CNN) - Top Spanish matador Jose Tomas has been released from a Mexican hospital after being severely gored in a bullfight last weekend, Spain's official news agency reported Saturday.

Tomas was upended and tossed several feet by a bull he was fighting at central Mexico's Plaza de Aguascalientes on April 25. Video captured the near-fatal goring and the matador carried out of the ring with his left thigh soaked in blood.

On Saturday, Tomas was discharged from a hospital in Aguascalientes in west central Mexico. He personally thanked the hundreds of people in Mexico who donated blood to save his life.

"No one can feel more Mexican and more grateful" Tomas said, according to the EFE news agency.

Tomas' release comes a week after he required a blood transfusion of several liters and reconstructive surgery to his femoral artery and vein after the bull's horns tore through his leg.

I live in Spain and I went to a bullfight a few weeks ago in Sevilla. Awful experience. A lot of first time Americans couldn't sit through it and I saw them walk away, but I stayed throughout all of it. It's really hard to find the art in something that looks so cruel, and I know people will say there is no/little art to bullfighting, but that's not true. It's just that the cruelness outweighs the art. Anyways, every generation less people care about bullfighting, so I believe we're heading in the right direction. Just watch El Barça instead or something 🙂

Bullfighters deserve no sympathy. He received only a taste of the pain he and all other bullfighters deserve. Bullfighting IS barbaric.

There is such a need for blood donation around the world to help people suffering from illnesses, accidents, etc. Then someone who willingly risks his life to "artfully" torture an animal to death gets much-needed blood and motivates people to give just for him–pathetic.

Anyone supporting bullfighting and claiming 'education' on the subject is clearly an uneducated buffoon. Someone who is willing to risk his life to artfully torture an animal to its death has earned more pain that what was received and is only a taste of what all bullfighters deserve. Bullfighting IS barbaric. Bullfighting supporters need to evolve.

Hmmm. Seeing news like this makes one think twice about keeping supporters of this sport out of our civilized nation.

With regards to Spanish and Mexican bullfighting; during the bullfighting season, in any recent years, how many babies in the U.S. are murdered by abortions ??
And, how many Americans that dismiss bullfighting as cruel and barbaric approve of these abortions that have murdered millions of innocent babies ?? Please, don't justify this by saying that they are fetuses and not babies. Walt

Having sat through 3 or 4 Spanish bullfights I still can't quite decided whether it's an art or not. The work of a torero definitely involves a great degree of skill and courage, and elements of a bullfight absolutely is pleasing to the eye while others certainly are not. But an art? I remain unconvinced.
What I do know is that I would much rather live and die a toro than a cow ending up as beef patty. I've seen enough of how both are treated to know for sure. So all of you outraged commentators, what about doing something about the way beef is farmed, too?

Walt, how about not campaigning every where you post. NO babies are murdered by abortion. Fetuses, yes, but not babies.

Back on track – I'm glad that the bullfighter has been released. If karma holds true he will suffer pain the rest of his life. Bullfighting might be traditional but how about an even field? Bull riding here in the States at least truly honors a good bull and they aren't turned into burgers.

I find it hard to believe that bull fighting is still allowed in today's modern world. The bull fighter is certainly very skilled but the bull never has a chance and there is absolutely NOTHING honorable about that! An ancient ceremony is just that ANCIENT or should be!

I agree totally with your coment. How can be this kind of barbaric "show" exists on XXI century.

Bullfighting is barbaric. "Hmmmm. . Let's see. I am going to get in a ring with a bull who is in severe pain and fighting for survival. Maybe that is not such a smart move?" The bullfighter got what he deserved, and he is being treated like a hero. Sick.

How can you americans say that about bullfighting, when you spend millions of dollars in boxing matches. Where two stupid humans hit each other until one of them is knocked down to the floor, with permant brain damage.

Wether you agree with bullfighting or not, a human life is worth much more than a bulls life, so to wish for the bullfighter to die just becuase he thinks different than you, is even worse than killing a bull!!

roberto a bull has no choice while the "stupid humans" are free to make that choice in the example you used.

I find it hard to believe that WARS are still allowed in modern world. Killing other people on behalf of material interests, killing innocent civilians, women and children, developing sophisticated technology in order to annihilate human beings more efficiently and economically...there is absolutely NOTHING honourable about that.

Bull fighting huh? never seen one before but with all the descriptions above.... it is cruelty to animals, simple. But, is it any worse than dog fighting? We should just stop all these cruelty instead of argueing back and forth.
