Obama extends sanctions against Syria

President Barack Obama has decided to extend sanctions on Syria, sending a letter to Congress Monday saying the yrians' continued support for terrorist organizations posed "a continuing unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States."

The president said Syria had "made some progress in suppressing foreign fighter networks infiltrating suicide bombers into Iraq," but its "actions and policies" regarding terror networks made it necessary to keep the sanctions in place.

The economic sanctions, first enacted in 2003, bar exports to Syria and ban Syrian commercial aircraft from landing in the United States. "As we have communicated to the Syrian government directly, Syrian actions will determine whether this national emergency is renewed or terminated in the future," Obama's letter said.

The fact that the United States is sanctioning Syria, which we have no business doing, is inherently offensive. This is one of the multiple outrageous accusations that Isreal has made against Syria in attempt to conseal what is truely taking place. Isreali government is evicting hundreds of Arabs in Palestine, Gaza and Jeruslam. This is a topic worth discussing, not invalid accusations based on preconcieved notions. There is always two sides of a story and we seriously need to hear the other side.

Nonsense... Syria represents no threat to the USA .. The threat for US is domestic.. check out in NY

@Ohan, nice try at a deflection but this issue has nothing to do with Israel so please stay on topic. The fact is Syria has engaged and continues to engage in terrorism in Lebanon and Iraq most recently. If they want a warm relationship with the west, then they need to stop promoting terrorism. It's that simple.

@Daniel, it is not an either/or situation. It is possible for the US to be threatened both domestically and internationally. Obviously you've been out of the loop – the US is fighting an insergency in Iraq which is costing Iraqi and American lives. Part of that insurgency is sponsored by Syria.

It's nice to have an opinion but when you speak with conviction about things you clearly know nothing about or demonstrate an obvious bias, your words do nothing but reflect badly on you.

Robert, the US kills more with their "terrorism" than any other country on the planet. They should sanction themselves.....

@robert, right-wing project much? You're so busy putting down the other guys, maybe you can do some explaining since you like to think you know so much.
    1. What alleged terror organizations is Syria supporting? The Palestinians? Well, my pseudo-educated friend, *that* has *everything* to do with Israel, and it is time for a serious discussion about that.
    2. Exactly which part of the Iraqi insurgency (lrn2spell BTW) is Syria promoting? Syria stopped a lot of them from crossing into and out of their borders.
Yeah, Syria has its faults, just like the US does, but it certainly is not deserving of continued sanctions. And like you said. it's nice to have an opinion, but perhaps you should just state it instead of attacking other posters and swallow you own pill. Your words reflected rather poorly on you as well.

Robert, you know nothing about the topic either. Fact is, Probably Daniel and Ohan know much better than you.

Syria is truly a bully nation, no need to argue that one, but how come other bully nations aren't being sanctioned likewise. Take Israel, China and Turkey for example:

-Israel evicts Arabs from their homes.
    -China abuses its own people.
-Turkey is lenient over the persecution of Christians on its territory.

While I love all the afore mentioned nations and I truly, truly adore USA, I believe those facts make USA look like a bully nation in its own right. Or does it Rob?

@Robert: Mr. Robert, I understand and respect what you are insinuating. However, the fact of the matter is that you are much misinformed. Syria has not and will not promote terrorism. Isreal is very much involved in this topic and several Congress men have confirmed this. If you do your research, you will find that Isreal has made the first accusation on Syria's "alleged" terrorist support. Then and only then did the United States intervine because we feel the need to be the Police of the world. So please Mr. Robert, do not try to claim I am "deflecting" attention away from Syria.

Why havent US passed any resolution against ISRAEL? Why? 1)Bcoz Israel is a Military base of US,it cannot sanction its own base. 2)Israel has more than 200+ nuclear warheads y not take up the matter at IAEA 3)Despite GOLDSTONE report against Israel on war-crimes against palestine still no resolution 4)GAZA a biggest open prison blocked by Israel 5)Israel threatening its neighbour with wars 6)Still no action as Israel continues to build more in E.Jerusalem against the UN orders 7)Children killed with phosphorous bombs still no resolution against it 8)Israel violates the air-space of every country still no resolution..Y Y Y? I believe in GOD & JUSTICE WILL B DONE..How long will the oppression last..Oppression will pay 1 day..

All you Zionists lover. You think US dictates terms to Israel and so it US's colony/base in the middle east. The fact is Israel treats US like a poodle. They dictate your foreign policy and treat you nothing more than a holiday retreat. Look at yourselves, from being the Victors of the WW1 and WW2, your obsession for Zionists has reduced you to being the most deplorable nation. You think Syrians/Iraqis/Iranians/Afghans/Pakis and all others hate your way of life. But the truth is that you suffer from an inferiority complex since you have no culture and history of your own to boast about.

The very reason why US engages in foreign conflicts from time to time is ensure that the population is always pre-occupied with the threat perception that someone out there wants to destroy US and your so-called way of life.
