Report: Hunter kills first hybrid polar-grizzly bear offspring

A hunter has killed a second generation polar-grizzly bear hybrid, the first second generation hybrid ever recorded in the wild, scientists in Canada are reporting.

An Inuvialuit hunter shot the animal on April 8 on sea ice near the Northwest Territories community of Ulukhaktok, according to a press release from the Northwest Territories Department of the Environment and Natural Resources.

The hunter, identified as David Kuptana, thought his kill looked unusual and submitted samples to the government for DNA testing, the news release said. Results of that testing released last week show the bear was the offspring of a polar-grizzly female and a male grizzly.

A male polar-grizzly was shot in the area in April 2006, the release said.

Global warming and the reduction of Arctic sea ice is likely to make such hybrid finds more common, scientists say.

"We're taking this continent-sized barrier to animal movement, and in a few generations, it's going to disappear, at least in summer months," Brendan Kelly, a marine biologist at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, told CNN affiliate CBC news.

The hunter, meanwhile, is looking to cash in on the animal’s pelt while it’s still rare and has received bids from across Canada, the CBC reported.

"Right now, we're already at $15,000, and we're going to see how far we can go," Kuptana told the CBC. "If we can do better, we'll be happy."

It's news because it's the first incidence of a second generation polar bear/grizzly hybrid, meaning that a polar bear and grizzly mated, and their offspring mated, which is pretty significant since many hybrid species are born sterile. For all of you flipping out over someone shooting an "endangered' animal, it looks like a polar bear and polar bears are NOT endangered, why don't you do some research before you start spewing your liberal tree-hugger hippie BS. Again I have to say, IMO, ignorant tree-huggers are more of a threat to society than ignorant bigots.

It's legal to kill one of the species but illegal to kill the other, so what happens when it is a cross-breed? Shouldn't he still face some sort of charges? I still remember the 2006 incident & was upset over that as well.
Why the heck would you even need to kill a bear of any kind??? Hunting should not be a sport, it should only be for necessity. If you feel it should be a sport for population control reasons or whatever, then why don't we get to "sport" shoot the poor, or the HIV/AIDS starving people in Africa or anyone who is sick/homeless/dying? We as humans are overpopulating the planet due to our ridiculous beliefes about birth conrtol (catholics, I'm talking about you here!) & other reasons, so maybe we should be included into the "population control" shooting as well. If people stopped breeding uncontrollably, then there would be room for the animals!
Geez....wonder what God thinks about all of us....

PorkFat888-Check your facts, the polar bear is STILL on the endangered species list. You should "do some research before you start spewing" your oppinion. (Useing your own words against you.)

Here's a link to see all of the endangered species:
