Report: Hunter kills first hybrid polar-grizzly bear offspring

A hunter has killed a second generation polar-grizzly bear hybrid, the first second generation hybrid ever recorded in the wild, scientists in Canada are reporting.

An Inuvialuit hunter shot the animal on April 8 on sea ice near the Northwest Territories community of Ulukhaktok, according to a press release from the Northwest Territories Department of the Environment and Natural Resources.

The hunter, identified as David Kuptana, thought his kill looked unusual and submitted samples to the government for DNA testing, the news release said. Results of that testing released last week show the bear was the offspring of a polar-grizzly female and a male grizzly.

A male polar-grizzly was shot in the area in April 2006, the release said.

Global warming and the reduction of Arctic sea ice is likely to make such hybrid finds more common, scientists say.

"We're taking this continent-sized barrier to animal movement, and in a few generations, it's going to disappear, at least in summer months," Brendan Kelly, a marine biologist at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, told CNN affiliate CBC news.

The hunter, meanwhile, is looking to cash in on the animal’s pelt while it’s still rare and has received bids from across Canada, the CBC reported.

"Right now, we're already at $15,000, and we're going to see how far we can go," Kuptana told the CBC. "If we can do better, we'll be happy."

I love how liberals preach tolerance but are totally intolerant to someone with different ideals. A hybrid is not an endangered spieces, it's an accidental mutt. Maybe it will become a new breed of bear, but that's another matter. What a lot of intolerant, ignorant bunch of liberals. Even if selling the bear pelt is wrong, it's the seller's problem, since when are you all the moral police? He's the one causing his own problem if he is wrong, which he's not, it's his pelt to sell. Worry about your own problems before you tell someone else how to live.

All you hippies need to shut up. The dude is a native, they hunt for food. They still kill whales and polar bears. It's thier culture, as well as a means of survival. If he makes a buck for his family, good on 'em. There aren't many jobs in that part of the continent.

I wonder what the meat taste like. Hell I would of shot it myself if given the chance. One thing about it this hunter don't kill it unless I'll eat it. Oh and for all you its a new speices or it's endangerd... it's a polar bear/ grizzly what kind of enviorment would it actually be able to survive in. get over the fact that we hunters kill animals its no different then the cow, chicken, pigs, and fish you all eat.

The world would be a much safer place for humans and wildlife if the words "GUN" and "KILL" were extinct!!! Cemetaries would be way less full!

Also, I like to drink coke so since the polar bear is their mascot... I really hate to hear that one was killed!! GUYS-put down your guns and pick up some weights once in a while and call yourself men! 😀

This is rediculous! Why are some people so heartless and cruel? Who would even do something like this? I wanna see the hunter who did it just to see if he looks as stupid as i imagine him to look. I mean you must look pretty dumb to do something like that.

Ok, so he shot the hybrid and didn't know it was special. So now he gets lots of money. So more bounty hunters go after the poor animals. It may not be his fault, but he shouldn't profit from it and encourage all the other greedy blood thirsty evil people.

I guarantee you that hunter shot the bear for meat to feed his family first, then sold the pelt as it was a bi-product of the kill. This has been going on for centuries and low and behold, bears are still in existence.

Maybe we should force whole foods to open a store in remote Alaska to keep the hybrid bears safe instead of allowing mother nature's children (that includes people) from doing what they've been doing for thousands of years before irrational, far-left political activists got involved!

First of all the Pelt is the poor bears furr. The man who shot the bear should utilize all of the animal, selling the pelt basically makes this guy a POACHER not a hunter. I think fish and game should confiscate the animal from him. He is a poacher.
