Security Brief: 'Slain' Taliban leader garners attention

Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud speaks to reporters in Mamouzi, Pakistan, in 2008.

For three months, Hakimullah Mehsud was supposedly dead, killed in a U.S. drone attack in the mountains of Pakistan, according to Pakistani officials.

Then word came last week from intelligence sources in Pakistan that he had not after all been killed, that he had been injured but not seriously.

And within days of that news, not one but two messages followed from Mehsud himself, both purportedly recorded in April. They warned of imminent attacks by the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, on unspecified targets in the United States.

U.S. intelligence and counterterrorism officials remain very skeptical about any TTP involvement in the weekend's attempted car bombing in New York. One senior official said it would be "an enormous surprise" if they were involved.

The TTP has shown little appetite or capability for operating beyond Pakistan and Afghanistan, though it was linked to a suicide bombing plot that unfolded in Spain and was broken up in 2008.

But Mehsud is back in action, courting publicity again.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. Surely the "heavens" will open up again on this guy and next time he won't be so lucky. Sad life to live where you know your life stands for violence and you know you are being hunted 24/7. Saddam is gone, so are his sons, previously leaders of these radicals are dead, captured or are in hiding. For this guy, tic-toc, tic-toc. And if there is another attack within the U.S. by any terrorists, rest assured the response of the U.S. will be disproportionate. One thing history teaches about terrorism, is that in the long run it NEVER prevails. The U.S. will around a thousand years after these guys are all dead. God bless America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

though i did not agree with invading iraq the fact remains we must do something to protect ourselves.our troops should be at the borders, the ports and anywhere entry into the country is easily done.we say the word illegal and auntomaticly mexico is called to mind. do we not realize anyone from ANYWHERE can get in this country just as easily?how hard
can it be if thousands cross our borders illegally everyday? or to bring a " dirty bomb" or biological weapon with them? the fact is the fanatics of islam willingly kill themselves to kill innocents. tighten our borders, watch our ports and airlines.then worry about taking the fight to they show no mercy,no mercy should be shown to those who would kill our citizens.

Just nuke them and get it over with. What's the point of having all these nukes if we're not going to use them against enemies who attack us at will??

what a well thought out argument. you should consider running for elected office, we can always use another deep thinker in our government.
yes, indeed why don't we just kill everyone, anywhere that some people disagree with us. (ok i know we're fighting a war, not just disagreement, but you get my point)

Who is with me???? i know a lot of tea-baggers have got my back on this one,
really why don't people just come out and say it. you want to kill, kill kill. because you are civilized and THEY aren't. right?!?! isn't that how you feel. they are wrong and we are right, they are bad and we are good. jesus loves us because we kill in his holy name?

right here. i am asking all those who claim to be Christian, to drop all support for wars, and live truly as Christ lived, and love as he loved. can so many of you not see the great hypocrisy of what has happened to so many who claim faith?

Muslim extremists will continue to attack the United States, Israel, etc... Its been going on since before I was born and will continue well into the future. Their religion of "peace" preaches murder... I think this will be a never ending battle.
