Minnesota man charged with stabbing 29 pigs

A drunk man stabbed 29 pigs in Minnesota, hurting them so badly they had to be slaughtered, according to charges filed against the man by police.

Curtis Adams, 23, said he did not remember stabbing the pigs, but did not deny having done it, Detective Matt Owens said in court papers.

A veterinarian said the best option was to "euthanize" the pigs, which were worth $7,824.67, according to police testimony.

Another police officer, Deputy Clint Cole, found Adams at a hog barn in Martin County, Minnesota, in the early hours of April 27, Owens said. Cole was responding to a suspicious person complaint.

"Adams' knuckles were skinned up and he had blood on them and smelled very strong like pigs and had pig manure on him," the police statement says.

Suspecting Adams was drunk, Cole had Adams stand on one leg and perform other tests to check sobriety. When he failed, Cole gave him a breathalyzer, which suggested Adams was over the legal limit.

He arrested Cole, later releasing him to a sober driver, police say.

Later that morning, workers at the Wiechman Pig Company, which owns the barn, discovered that a number of pigs had been cut.

Owens, the detective, went to the barn, where he met Adams, who was coming to retrieve his pickup truck from the scene.

Adams "had dried blood on his shirt, pants and shoes," Owens noticed.

Workers at the barn found a knife in the grass while the detective and Adams were there, he said.

Adams said the knife was his, according to the police officer.

"Adams did not deny being in the hog barn or stabbing the pigs, but he would only say that he could not remember," Owens said.

When he showed Adams photos of the injured pigs, "Adams stated that he must have done it, but he does not remember doing it," Owens stated.

Adams has been charged with six counts, including cruelty to animals, damage to property, burglary and driving under the influence of alcohol. The two most serious charges, burglary and damage to property, each carry potential penalties of five years in prison or $10,000 fine, or both.

It was not clear from Minnesota court records if a trial date has been set.

IF there is no God and evolution was completely random,
THEN there is no right or wrong, no cruelty, and no reason to care about anyone other than yourself,
because morality can only exist if there is an absolute standard.

IF there are acts that are wrong,
THEN there has to be a God to be the absolute authority.

That so many people are automatically upset about inhumane treatment to members of other species is evidence that God exists. Blind, random evolution should not cause a carnifore or omnivore to feel sorry for its prey, or food source.

By the way, Hebrew and Christian scriptures do advocate treating the animals well, even when they will be food. One can even argue that some passages speak against mental cruelty to animals. For example, scriptures say to not cook a calf in the milk of its mother. Why? That would be like adding cruel insult to injury. Scriptures also instruct to not put a muzzle on an ox as it is working in the field. It would be cruel to make it work hard with grain (food) slapping it in the nose and not let it have a bite.

    Kyle,

I completely disagree with your comment, but I wasn't making a point; it just sounded ridiculous and therefore, funny, to ask you that.

Poor pigs! What a tragedy! Pigs are intelligent creatures, as has been scientifically proven, so they suffered just as much as we would with such grievous wounds. This evil idioit should be imprisoned for as long as if he murdered 29 people.

My God, what a piece of work is man! Such arrogance. We think we are the highest-level thinkers!! Hah! If we were the superior beings we think we are, we would have more compassion for other animals.

All creatures have equal moral right to live their lives freely and unharmed. Anyone who thinks humans feel pain and sadness more than other mammals and birds, etc., is ignorant of the facts AND lacking in empathy.

I expect some people will find this information offensive to their sensibilities –well, tough! Humans need to get over themselves and start to respect other animals more. They suiffer just as we do and this awful crime should not be dismissed lightly. We need to get over the stupid, selfish idea of "dominion over animals."

    Eileen,

You are correct on most of your points, however the cause of the problem is not the idea of "dominion over animals," but rather the misunderstanding (to be generous) or outright twisting of the concept. The dominion that people should exercise over animals is that of a cultivator and care taker.

For example, a good rancher, farmer, or gardener would take good care of his or her land and animals so that they grow well and are productive. That "dominion" implies more of a responsibility than a free rein to do as one pleases.

I once killed 50 crabs at the sea shore by dropping a heavy wooden pole on each of them. I counted them as I killed. I was 11 years old and I wasn't drunk. Right afterwards I felt bad about it and still feel bad about it. May their crabby souls rest in pieces.

Eileen, may I be the first to say you are an ignorant you know what. What you offer as solid morality is not. As you can tell, I am a moral relativist.

ANON....WRONG! "IF there is no God and evolution was completely random,
THEN there is no right or wrong, no cruelty, and no reason to care about anyone other than yourself, because morality can only exist if there is an absolute standard."

Says who? You? Some book you read by some other guy? There is no absolute standard today! Every religion has different standards and they all cancel each other out. If you take god out of the whole equation.... people would still be upset about things like this. It's sad that the only reason you(and others like you)bother pretending to be good people is because you are blackmailed with the threat of burning in hell FOREVER by your make believe god. Get over yourself.
