Minnesota man charged with stabbing 29 pigs

A drunk man stabbed 29 pigs in Minnesota, hurting them so badly they had to be slaughtered, according to charges filed against the man by police.

Curtis Adams, 23, said he did not remember stabbing the pigs, but did not deny having done it, Detective Matt Owens said in court papers.

A veterinarian said the best option was to "euthanize" the pigs, which were worth $7,824.67, according to police testimony.

Another police officer, Deputy Clint Cole, found Adams at a hog barn in Martin County, Minnesota, in the early hours of April 27, Owens said. Cole was responding to a suspicious person complaint.

"Adams' knuckles were skinned up and he had blood on them and smelled very strong like pigs and had pig manure on him," the police statement says.

Suspecting Adams was drunk, Cole had Adams stand on one leg and perform other tests to check sobriety. When he failed, Cole gave him a breathalyzer, which suggested Adams was over the legal limit.

He arrested Cole, later releasing him to a sober driver, police say.

Later that morning, workers at the Wiechman Pig Company, which owns the barn, discovered that a number of pigs had been cut.

Owens, the detective, went to the barn, where he met Adams, who was coming to retrieve his pickup truck from the scene.

Adams "had dried blood on his shirt, pants and shoes," Owens noticed.

Workers at the barn found a knife in the grass while the detective and Adams were there, he said.

Adams said the knife was his, according to the police officer.

"Adams did not deny being in the hog barn or stabbing the pigs, but he would only say that he could not remember," Owens said.

When he showed Adams photos of the injured pigs, "Adams stated that he must have done it, but he does not remember doing it," Owens stated.

Adams has been charged with six counts, including cruelty to animals, damage to property, burglary and driving under the influence of alcohol. The two most serious charges, burglary and damage to property, each carry potential penalties of five years in prison or $10,000 fine, or both.

It was not clear from Minnesota court records if a trial date has been set.

Are you out of your mind by putting up such a post on a public forum? Not funny and might even be criminal.

    Or you're just criminally stupid.

My theory is that Cole was not only drunk but high on mushrooms at the time. Prior to committing this heinous act he was watching Animal Farm on DVD in the safety of his own home when he suddenly remembered the nearby hog farm which housed 29 pig militants. He then snuck into the hog farm and covertly stabbed the members of this group. This is nothing more than a simple case of self defense. He saw a threat and eliminated it.

Dewd Iles- I find your post very ironic calling someone stupid. You have no fact in your statement. You think this "poor" cop is so over worked that he missed blood and beat up hands to a point that it was dried on the suspect the next morning? Quit trying to play the sympathy card and make excuses for people, it was a mistake on the officers part for not completely checking the surroundings. Not everyone is good at what they do, this guy just so happens to suck. Please go choke yourself.

What's wrong with you people? No compassion on this young outstanding man. He was training to be a butcher and then go to culinary school and being his first time he was nervous so he had a few drinks to calm the edge. I knew this would be a magnet story allowing those self righteous vegitarians a podium.

if he did this to pigs and he doesnt remember he proably capable of doing the same thing to a human!!

Most of serial killers start by killing animals when they were young, this guy needs to be lock up behind bars for a long time! If not he needs to go to a rehabilation center for his ALCOHOLISM!!!

I am appalled by this story. Yes, this guy is obviously alcoholic but should still be punished for his acts. I am a vegetarian going on to be a vegan because animal farming is just plain cruel to animals.

You will see this guy back in the news for a murder charge later in life. People who attack animals like this are damaged goods.

I'm sorry, let's think about this. This happened at the Wiechman Pig Company, not to your neighbor's pet pigs. Want to guess what they do at Wiechman? They have two sides to their business: 1) slaughtering pigs, and 2) selling pigs to people that will slaughter them. While the man did do significant damage, the pigs would have died before too long anyway, and as other have said, not in so humane of ways.

Second, this happened in rural Minnesota where farm work and slaughter are frequent practices. Butchers and farmers are no more often serial killers than any other segment of the population. Unless you're a vegetarian or vegan that eats no meat, he's not much more guilty of animal cruelty than you or I are. The only difference is that others are getting their hands dirty for us.

Everyone seems to be overreacting here. The guy's crime is stupidity. He's a 23 year old kid that can't hold his alcohol. He screwed up and should be fined and put on probation with a good deal of community service.
