Minnesota man charged with stabbing 29 pigs

A drunk man stabbed 29 pigs in Minnesota, hurting them so badly they had to be slaughtered, according to charges filed against the man by police.

Curtis Adams, 23, said he did not remember stabbing the pigs, but did not deny having done it, Detective Matt Owens said in court papers.

A veterinarian said the best option was to "euthanize" the pigs, which were worth $7,824.67, according to police testimony.

Another police officer, Deputy Clint Cole, found Adams at a hog barn in Martin County, Minnesota, in the early hours of April 27, Owens said. Cole was responding to a suspicious person complaint.

"Adams' knuckles were skinned up and he had blood on them and smelled very strong like pigs and had pig manure on him," the police statement says.

Suspecting Adams was drunk, Cole had Adams stand on one leg and perform other tests to check sobriety. When he failed, Cole gave him a breathalyzer, which suggested Adams was over the legal limit.

He arrested Cole, later releasing him to a sober driver, police say.

Later that morning, workers at the Wiechman Pig Company, which owns the barn, discovered that a number of pigs had been cut.

Owens, the detective, went to the barn, where he met Adams, who was coming to retrieve his pickup truck from the scene.

Adams "had dried blood on his shirt, pants and shoes," Owens noticed.

Workers at the barn found a knife in the grass while the detective and Adams were there, he said.

Adams said the knife was his, according to the police officer.

"Adams did not deny being in the hog barn or stabbing the pigs, but he would only say that he could not remember," Owens said.

When he showed Adams photos of the injured pigs, "Adams stated that he must have done it, but he does not remember doing it," Owens stated.

Adams has been charged with six counts, including cruelty to animals, damage to property, burglary and driving under the influence of alcohol. The two most serious charges, burglary and damage to property, each carry potential penalties of five years in prison or $10,000 fine, or both.

It was not clear from Minnesota court records if a trial date has been set.

what a mean person. This is so cruel and inhuman. I hope the charges on animal cuelty are severe.

Beware fo this guy, like ADRIANA said, "if he did this to pigs and he doesnt remember he proably capable of doing the same thing to a human!!

Most of serial killers start by killing animals when they were young, this guy needs to be lock up behind bars for a long time! If not he needs to go to a rehabilation center for his ALCOHOLISM!!!"

Pigs are food to people just like dogs and cats can be food to people. But if I went to a kennel and started stabbing all these dogs, the outrage would be significantly greater. Simply because people pick and choose which animals are worthy of their sympathy. Hypocrites! If you're against torturing a dog, you should also be against the torturing of these pigs.

I agreed with Bezoar and thank you for your comments. I am not proud of myself since I am not 100% vegetarian. I want to but do not have enough will power yet. I am ashamed of myself and I fully know that I am not any better than Adams. In two TV programs dealing with intelligence in animals, pigs were ranked higher than dogs (If I remember correctly, higher than dolphins too). For those of us who are still eating meat (bacon, steak, fish...) on a regular basis, what Adams had done is not anyway worse than us. We have eaten oyters, clams, crawfishes, lobsters, crabs..., Most of the time, they are boiled alive for us to eat. I don't condone Adams' action, but we have no right to condemn him based on a higher moral ground. Let's stop being hypocritical. We cannot claim to love animals when we eat them. We might love dogs, cats...but do we really love pigs or cows? Actually what we love are pork and beef.

"which suggested Adams was over the legal limit."

What exactly is the "legal limit" for blood alcohol concentration for a person who is in a hog barn in Minnisota? Most states have legal limits for driving with BAC above a certain level, but there is no legal limit for being in a hog barn. Looks like a bit of lazy journalism to me.

Wow, guy stabs 29 pigs and admits to it. He sure has the bacon... or was it something else? My throng of metaphors has recently been depleted.

This is awful! It's not really that much of a leap from drunkenly stabbing pigs to stabbing people. Law enforcement, keep your eyes on this nut!

We live in a country where we have starving children. Cook the pigs and feed the kids. It is amazing the crap we think is "newsworthy". They are PIGS. Worry more about humans.

Well Sue, if you think animal farming is cruel, think about this. Every year of our fat-cat lives, Christians spend untold millions of dollars building massive edifices to the glory of God while ten million human babies starve to death.

Think about it, Sue. Every year, on average, ten million human babies die because they don't have food to eat. The money Christians spend on faux bell spires and colored glass church windows would save their precious lives. If God had a face, he would turn it. If God had feet, he would run. What we do to our own, more mercifully, would be done with a loaded gun.
