[Updated at 3:46 p.m.] Hall of Fame football star Lawrence Taylor was charged with third-degree rape Thursday in a case involving a 16-year-old girl, police said.

[Posted at 10:40 a.m.] Hall of Fame football linebacker Lawrence Taylor was arrested Thursday in connection with a rape investigation involving a 16-year-old girl, police in Ramapo, New York, said.

Christopher St. Lawrence, the Ramapo, New York, town supervisor and police commissioner, said Taylor, 51, was expected to be charged with third degree rape, which carries a possible penalty of four years in jail.

According to St. Lawrence, Taylor was arrested at the Holiday Inn in Ramapo, about 30 miles northwest of New York City, on Thursday after Ramapo police received a call from New York City police detectives acting on information from the alleged victim's uncle.

The girl, a runaway from New York's Bronx borough since March, was allegedly brought to Ramapo by a pimp, St. Lawrence said.

When the pimp and the girl returned to New York City, she texted an uncle who notified police, St. Lawrence said. New York City police arrested the pimp and called Ramapo, and Taylor was then arrested, he said.

CNN's attempt to contact Taylor's agent was not immediately successful.

Taylor was a 10-time all-pro linebacker for the New York Giants from 1981 to 1993 after earning All American honors at the University of North Carolina.

A punishing tackler and pass rusher known by his initials "L.T.," he was on two Super Bowl champion teams and was inducted into the National Football League's Hall of Fame, which noted that he "redefined the way the outside linebacker position was played."

However, Taylor was twice suspended by the NFL for substance abuse and battled a cocaine addiction long after retirement, resulting in several arrests and a downward spiral that he chronicled in a 2003 autobiography.

After kicking drugs, he worked as a sports commentator and appeared as a contestant on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" in 2009. Taylor and his dance partner on the program, Evyta Swilinska, finished seventh in the competition. - CNN's Ross Levitt contributed to this story The-CNN-Wire/Atlanta/+1-404-827-5872

This man has just been arrested in this investigation....I don't think he looks high – just devastated. He has made mistakes in the past and probably knows that most people are going to jump to the conclusions that most of you here did. People can change if given the chance. If he is guilty then he will be punished, if not this hangs over his head for the rest of his life. The only real monsters here are the loud mouth bigots!

Now there's a shocking headline. That's what our sports figures are made up of these days. Nothing but a bunch of damn worthless thugs. The girl was 15.

Hopefully, the girl's father will be brave enough to put one in this guy's forehead because otherwise I have to add him to the list of shifless morons I'm supporting in prison with my tax dollars.

And for everyone saying he's innocent before proven guilty, the police don't arrest you for something like that these days unless they have the DNA evidence already in hand and an iron-clad case. This piece of s*** is headed to the pen for good.

He'll be able to practice his line skills for real once the sisters get a hold of him. Nothing like getting traded for a pack of smokes every day. Way to go LT.

Whatever happended to "innocent until proven guilty"? It never existed. In America we have slogans that don't mean anything. Slogans that we don't follow, but just say over and over again like a mantra we don't follow. It's guilty as soon as the word hits the wire and then prove your innocense. They've stripped many a good person down long before anyone had a chance to take their defense. This is how it's done in America... don't pay attention to that "innocent until proven guilty" slogan...that's all it is.

A sad day when we declare someone guilty before due process, yes! But equally sad when the rich and famous are consistently able to BUY their way out and are soon forgiven and worshipped again. Now that's sad!

LT does crack? No way...LOL He is such a upstanding NFL Super Star that is in the Hall of Fame..right? There is just no way he could be guilty...is it? Come on folks...the guy played football on cocaine and has openly admitted it!! Then we are going to sit back and say he is a model for our children???? What a bunch of crap!!

And the ones on here that don't like the fact that people have a opinion and are expressing their opinion, should go to Face Book, because there you can block people from their comments, but here, on this blog...you have to face the truth of the matter, and the truth is he is innocent until proven guilty or until he admits he did this, but for the idiots who say "if he was white" that this would not of happened...come on!!! Get over your color, because you are holding back the progress of your own race!!! And you are showing your own true colors, what ever that may be, but I would assume it is yellow...Oh my bad...that is the color of crack, and that means I'm being a racist because only black people smoke crack...right?

WHATEVER????? I HATE WHEN LOWER INTELLIGENT PEOPLE USE THE RACE CARD, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE PEOPLE..... CAN YOU SAY OBAMA AND PRESIDENT???

Uh? Sorry Joe capobianco.... LT is a legend, but his legend will be not only on the football field (where he openly admitted to doing cocaine while playing), but also what he does with his life away from the field... so "IF" he is found guilty of this crime then he will be another fallen LEGEND.... and if you still see him as a legend "IF" he is found guilty..then I would like you to look the victim in the face adn tell her he is still your legend... YOU TRY AGAIN.
