Costa Rica to inaugurate new president

Costa Ricans were preparing Friday to inaugurate the country's first female president.

President-elect Laura Chinchilla is to take office in a ceremony Saturday morning. She won an election in February and will replace President Oscar Arias, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 and has led the Central American nation of 4.5 million since 2006 after a previous term from 1986 to 1990.

The Costa Rican government declared a holiday for parts of the country Friday, ordering the closure of schools and public establishments as crowds began to converge on the capital city for the president-elect's inauguration, a government statement said.

Congratulations to a heroic and determined individual who will now become President of Costa Rica. A very progressive country with all its emphasis on infrastructure– education, roads, public services. No army no military. Hope they can be a model government to others in Central and South America.
