Latino rights group, others call for Arizona boycott

A Latino rights group and other immigrant and labor organizations have called for a national boycott of Arizona over the state's new immigration law, which allows police to ask anyone being investigated for a crime for proof of legal U.S. residency.

The call was led by the National Council of La Raza, which bills itself as the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Other groups joining the call include the Asian American Justice Center, the Center for Community Change, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the National Puerto Rican Coalition, the Service Employees International Union, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

The groups pledged not to hold major conventions, conferences or other special events involving significant travel to Arizona from out of state and "asked others to consider whether their purchases of goods and services might perpetuate the unjust and discriminatory law in Arizona," La Raza said on its website.

"When a law so contrary to our values is passed, we must act decisively," said La Raza President and CEO Janet Murguia. "We are calling for a boycott because this law will blow open the door to increased racial profiling, wrongful arrests and other discrimination."

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who signed the immigration measure April 23, says it does not involve racial profiling or any other illegal acts. The law, known as SB 1070, is scheduled to go into effect this summer.

The measure as originally signed into law said police could ask anyone at any time for proof of legal residency. The legislature passed new wording last week stipulating that police could ask for residency status only if that person was being investigated for another crime. Brewer signed the new language into law.

    For :Lloyd
(feel instead of the Az law they state should have passed a law to allow illegals to get registered within a 90 day period by paying a fine 150-250 USD and a fee 150-250 USD)
    That's not good.
I have good friends in the legal Immigration system right now that pay over $1500 a year for their work visa ,They are working towards citizen status.
they also pay taxes to the state & federal Government,They have Med. insurance ,Some have businesses with employee's
All are legal & good people. They love America. They bide their time like all that do it legally.
Their only fear is that they will be deported because of the crap created by the Illegals.

When you get pulled over by an officer while driving too fast or whatever, what is the first thing they ask for? License, it should state your citizenship right there. But the concept of ciminalizing something illegal makes no sense. And those here legally must be able to understand that laws need to be enforced or all is lost. So get over it would you. I know I will be planning a trip to AZ this fall.

Good for Arizona. I support their attempt to control illegal immigration.
We live in a country of laws; it some can break the law without penalty then we risk falling into chaos.
Don't tell me that these people do the work that Americans won't – if legal Americans will not work for the wages offered in certain industries, then employers need to pay a decent wage. If that increases the cost to have a house cleaned, a yard landscaped, or vegetables harvested, then those costs should be paid by those who purchase the product. If the federal government enforced the laws on hiring illegals then this issue would eventually resolve itself.
We tried amnesty before under Reagan; it didn't work then and it won't work now.

The NAACP *does* allow white people to join. In fact, it was started by black and white people.

Look the number reason that so many democrats are opposed to this bill is this:

If Arizona kicks out all the illegal immigrants, the democrats are watching all their future votes go back to Mexico. It's all political

I say good for Arizona, don't cave under the pressure. Especially when most people I see on here or talk to in person all say this law is a good thing.

Oh and one more thing, its already been said before, this law is pretty much just the current federal law. Difference is, Arizona has plans on enforcing this version!!

After the Obama Regime with a sroke of a pen makes all of the illegals legal just what other laws that they do not like will they not follow ? what is this Latin Pride thing ? What pride is there in running like cowards away from your homeland instead of staying and trying to fix the wrongs ? What PRIDE is there in running to a country and taking advantage of its social programs when they have never paid a dime into the system. PRIDE ? I think Latin Shame is a better lable.

  9. Racial Profiling

Legal immigrants in Arizona need to support checking IDs and profiling. One of the often overlooked affects is that of Legal Mexican Immigrants being treated like illegal criminals b/c the vast majority of immigrants are illegal. If I spent $3,000-5,000 on papers and immigration, came here to be an American, and wanted to build a better life - and then got treated like an illegal, I'd want that fixed as well. I agree with the above poster - be proud to show your ID. Illegals need to get out of this country. IF they want back in, they need to apply legally, if it's too expensive, WE DON"T WANT YOU. Everywhere there is a large group of immigrants (California is a great example) there is poverty, packed schools, drained local resources due to free and reduced lunches and free books, and growing gang problems. I don't work like crazy to pay for somebody else's kids. If you're too poor to survive on your own, don't come here. This is a LAW in Mexico regarding immigration, it's in several other countries too. Stop weighing down our system.

Drugs should be legalized. Legalize them, tax them, and imprison those who abuse them. Amsterdam does this, and Amsterdam has very few crimes.

Guns need to be regulated. America is responsible for this. The borders need to be far more closed, background checks on gun buyers need to be far more strict, and gun-sellers who break these laws need to spend time in prisons - prisons that will have far more room if we legalize drugs.

Ironically you don't see Mexicans complaining about this type of violence, the corruption or criticitcing/confronting Narco president’s Calderon government and his corrupted cronnies.

But they have the guts to come to USA to complain and confront the government… because they are breaking the law…

They want to make USA a lawless country like Mexico. They want to take, not to give like they do in Mexico where more or less 90% of the population don’t pay any kind of taxes and they basically survive stealing and bleeding their sibblings dry. They come now to USA to bleed our health system dry as well… I know a case where a Mexican young woman from Mexicali, crosses the border to go collect her WIC in Calexico. She gave her grandmother's address but she lives in MEjicali with her useless unemployed boyfriend. They are only smart to spread their legs and find one zillion ways to abuse the system.

Even the earth shakes trying to get rid of them unsuccessfully!!!!

Go gome illegal Mexic-ANOS (ANO in Spanish means behind or more specifically A$$) and any other illegal resident. Go and complain with your governments, show the same guts you are showing here, you might be surprised with the results.

About Latino Centers? They just care about your money. If they really care they will open their houses and pockets to help you or provide their legal services for free, instead, they have good salaries and what they give you are just pennies.

These people are not loyal to this country, only to their stomachs and wallets. They are not even loyal to their countries no matter how many times they scream : "Que viva Mexico!"

Yeah yeah, you are so proud of your country that you keep it like a huge dumpster and it can be seen every place you go down there.

They have no money for tortillas or suppoer their many kids, but yes, they have money for cel phones...

Illegals, protect USA, be loyal to USA or go back!!!

Illegals are also complaining about separation of family...

well, the first ones leaving family behind are them. Then once here, they get a new woman and totally forget about their kids left behind.

    Que hipocresia, no creen?

Here is an idea. Anyone who is profiled falsely (Hispanic or anyone else) who can prove they are supposed to be in the US get $1000.

And AZ has to pay it.

That way, almost no one will be falsely profiled, so only the illegals will have to be prosecuted.

The money will compensate people for the humiliation of being stopped and searched if they are innocent.
