Latino rights group, others call for Arizona boycott

A Latino rights group and other immigrant and labor organizations have called for a national boycott of Arizona over the state's new immigration law, which allows police to ask anyone being investigated for a crime for proof of legal U.S. residency.

The call was led by the National Council of La Raza, which bills itself as the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Other groups joining the call include the Asian American Justice Center, the Center for Community Change, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the National Puerto Rican Coalition, the Service Employees International Union, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

The groups pledged not to hold major conventions, conferences or other special events involving significant travel to Arizona from out of state and "asked others to consider whether their purchases of goods and services might perpetuate the unjust and discriminatory law in Arizona," La Raza said on its website.

"When a law so contrary to our values is passed, we must act decisively," said La Raza President and CEO Janet Murguia. "We are calling for a boycott because this law will blow open the door to increased racial profiling, wrongful arrests and other discrimination."

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who signed the immigration measure April 23, says it does not involve racial profiling or any other illegal acts. The law, known as SB 1070, is scheduled to go into effect this summer.

The measure as originally signed into law said police could ask anyone at any time for proof of legal residency. The legislature passed new wording last week stipulating that police could ask for residency status only if that person was being investigated for another crime. Brewer signed the new language into law.

If all these groups want to boycott AZ now, I say lets boycott MEXICO. Two can play this game, oh wait that just would not be fair though would it? I am sorry I don't care who you are or where you are from, come here legally and learn the language and we would not have this problem....

Call it: Spanish blockage 1070. This law is intended to eliminate Spanish speaking elements from Arizona cities and towns so that White Arizona Aristocrats can "claim" their state again. This is not intended to stop or reduce illegal immigration. Shame on you Arizonians for allowing these segregation laws into effect. The only good thing about all of this is that America is too great of a country to allow this to go unpunished. The people of Arizona will suffer from this for years to come. I have personally removed Arizona from the US map. I will never set my foot in there ever again! It is my right to say no and spend my vacation dollars where I feel welcomed and not intimidated.

As an American, I support enforcement of federal immigration laws. As a Latino, I protest Arizonans blatant attempt to marginalize the Hispanic community. Hiding behind illegal immigration as an issue to assert the Arizona Nazi agenda is not kosher. It is as obvious as a swastika when you have pictures of State Sen. Russell Pierce hugging a neo Nazi as shown by Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.The angry mob that use FOX NEWS as Viagra to form their hardened misguided opinions ignore Arizona’s recent racist history. Look to the people behind the new law. The ones who influenced the writing and the language. When you know who they are you will know their agenda. ; {)- GO LAKERS>
    Boycott Arizona !!

Time for the government to step up and do something. Maybe we should look closely who we make a citizen and who we let into the country. It wasn't an illegal immigrant that left a car full of explosives in NY.

If you are an American, & you can stand there & accuse us of being NAZIS.
Then you have not learned anything in your life.
The Nazis marched Illegally into Poland.France,Belgium,Holland,Yugoslavia,Czechoslovakia, Greece,Russia,Africa,Norway,Again ILLEGALLY.They did it because they wanted to Steal someone Else's resources
A lot of human beings died because of that ILLEGAL War.
Now The Illegal Border Criminal's do the same thing as the Nazis They come to Steal our resources & you Dare as an American citizen To preach to us that what they are doing is OK,It's different than what the Nazis Did. Is that What you are Implying.,
You should be ashamed to call your self an American.

I am proud of the fact that we live in a country where everybody can put theyre opinions on facts and form a debate...

First off, I'm Puertorican, hispanic blood flows through me like most latinos, but i do not understand why hispanics in the states are getting mad. at least some anyway. the whole argument about it will lead to racial profiling is inept. mainly because if you have darker skin you are more likely to get pulled over anyway. its called the DUB (driving while brown).

but in all seriousness, the fact is that is that when a cop pulls you over they will ask you for your license, if you do not have some sort of residency you cannot obtain one. that is more than enough to justify asking for residency papers. i have argued this with mexican friends of mine and they cant really rebut this. this is actually one of the more common sense laws that is out there. its a matter of people not misinterpreting what the special interest groups are trying to accomplish. in all honesty, i can say ive been profiled against and discriminated, and this is nowhaere near it. i am proud of my ancestry and where i came from (im actually from the island, born and raised till i became 24) but the fact remains that in order for me to travel to another country, i gotta have papers, if i dont have papers and a police officer pulls me over, i get deported, why should the US not do the same.
