Mass celebrated for slain UVA student

The Catholic Student Ministry at the University of Virginia celebrated Mass at noon Friday for slain student and lacrosse player Yeardley Love.

Love was killed this week and another student has been arrested.Preview

"This is neither a funeral nor the university's memorial service; rather, an opportunity for Catholics within the university to pray for one of our own," the student organization said on its website.

Love is to be buried Saturday in Towson, Maryland.

A male UVA student and lacrosse player has been charged with murder in her death.

The student, George Huguely, 22, was arrested on suspicion of murder Monday, hours after a roommate found Love's body in her off-campus apartment in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Love, also 22, and Huguely played on their school's highly ranked lacrosse teams, which are preparing for the NCAA championship tournaments this month.

Huguely's attorney, Francis Lawrence, said the woman's death was accidental.

"We are confident that Ms. Love's death was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome," Lawrence said.

Huguely made his first appearance before a judge in Charlottesville on a first-degree murder charge via video from the county jail Tuesday morning.

His lawyer did not request bond.

May she Rest in Peace, and may her family, friends, & teammates be comforted by the knowledge that she is in Heaven, no longer suffering in a mortal body.

All of us here in Baltimore are heartsick over this. We are stunned and saddened, and can only hope justice will be served.
How sad that the warning signs of this young man's past history with anger/violence issues was not addressed years ago. Possibly two lives could have been saved.
We must work harder to alert our young women to the significanent importance of this issue in relationships. Education on this issue as early as middle school is a must. !!
Rest in Peace Yeardley. Your family is in our prayers today.

Does anyone know if the family was able to view her prior to her burial? Or was she in too bad condition due to the beating?

I feel for the family and the UVA community but I'm not sure why commenters continue to bring up his affluence. My understanding is that the girls' family was also affluent.

If this monster is found guilty, send him to Alaska and drive him out near the Knik Glacier, tie him to a tree and smear bacon grease on him and let the grizzlies lick him to death. I was stationed in Alaska many years ago.
