On the Radar: Oil leak, Times Square plot, slain UVA student

Officials say they hope this massive dome will help cap the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

Gulf oil spill - A massive dome began its descent into the Gulf of Mexico to cap a gushing oil leak about 5,000 feet below the surface, a BP official said Friday. CNN will take a look at how the dome would work and what impact the spill is having on tourism in the Pensacola, Florida, region as well as continue to bring you the latest developments on the oil spill.

Times Square bomb plot - A senior law enforcement official says investigators think Times Square bomb suspect Faisal Shahzad had help. They believe he has ties to a Pakistani Taliban group, the official says. CNN reporters will continue to dig into this story and give you the latest details about the plot and the investigation into Shahzad and his background.

University of Virginia student slaying - The Catholic Student Ministry at the University of Virginia plans to hold a Mass at noon ET Friday for Yeardley Love, a student and lacrosse player who was killed this week. She is to be buried Saturday in Towson, Maryland. A male UVA student and lacrosse player has been charged with murder in her death.

Democrats to press GOP on nomination holds - Frustrated Democrats plan to go to the Senate floor Friday to seek Republican approval of 53 administration nominees they say are currently blocked by secret holds placed by GOP senators.

Their children jailed, mothers forge bond - One mother cherishes a photo her son snapped while riding horses. Another loves biking with her son along rivers. A third clings to the memory of her last visit with her daughter. The three have formed a bond through adversity and, this week, they met up in New York with a message for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: Release our children. As Mother’s Day nears, the three moms are heading back home - to California, Minnesota and Pennsylvania - without an answer and without their children, known by the world as “the hikers” jailed in Iran. But looking back over the past nine months, the mothers do have something to cling to: their bond with each other. Fifty years after the pill, what's next? - On the 50th anniversary of the birth control pill, CNN looks at what’s on the horizon for birth control. For decades the male pill has been “five to seven years away,” but now there are phase 3 trials under way. Other possible innnovations include an implanted vaginal ring that lasts a year and spray-on condoms.

    dome is not necessary and wasting time – oil floats to surface and can be pumped into tankers/barges –

    employ a floatation of existing tankers/barges starting at epicenter of shaft leak to recover (pump skim off surface oil)

    possible "stop leak" would be explosion deep in old shaft using a missile

    Just plug up the hole and clean up your mess ........ if your more worried about still removing the oil
    for your benefit of a fatter wallet ......... that's like throwing salt in the face of the people who make their living on the Gulf Coast not to mention they cant ever fish eat or swim there ever again for the nest 20 years .......
