Suu Kyi backers say they'll form party

Supporters of detained Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said Friday they will form a new political party after she was not allowed to participate in an upcoming election.

The new party, called National Democratic Force, is made up of some members of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, said Than Nyein, who will lead the new party.

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has been under military rule since 1962.

The junta has promised to hold elections - which would be the first since 1990 - later this year. In March, the junta announced a new election law that disqualified Suu Kyi from participating.

This is a dangerous move. I see the hand of the hated dictators in this. This will only marginalize Daw Su. But wgy? Why? Why?
