Kagan to be Supreme Court nominee, CNN confirms

[Update 11:06 p.m. ET] President Obama will select Solicitor General Elena Kagan as the Supreme Court nominee to replace the retiring John Paul Stevens, a legal source close to the process told CNN Sunday evening.

The nomination is expected to be announced Monday at 11 a.m. ET, another source familiar with the process said.

Kagan, 50, a New York native, was widely reported to be the frontrunner for the nomination. She was a finalist for the high court vacancy last year when Justice Sonia Sotomayor was selected to replace the retiring David Souter.

Kagan would be the third woman on the nine-justice bench if confirmed.

@TEE......You seem to have some very serious problems, dictator? Really?!? Just how do you figure that/ Did someone tell you that? They must have because there's certainly nothing you can point at that states that. He has not done one thing that every other president hasn't done. If you think he has, please name it. I believe you really have to start to get your news and opinions from another source for awhile. Turn off Fox No News, read a newspaper, preferable 2 or 3 of them. Do your own research instead of being told what to think. I know it requires some effort on your part but man, open up your maind and let the sun in.

To Seth (#29): Yeah, Obama's going to pick a moderate just like GW Bush did when he picked Alito and Roberts, both ultra-conservatives. They got to join two other ultra-conservatives: Scalia and Thomas. So now there are FOUR ultra-conservatives on the court. And Kagan is NOT ultra-liberal. Nice pick, Mr. President.

I wish Obama had chosen a black Muslim-someone like Louis Farrakhan-someone with no legal background who would legislate from the bench.

She is a friend of Larry Summers and the whole in-crowd in DC, so this is not too surprising. Everyone of them was rooting for her all along.

She attends the same synagogue, the same university (Harvard, of course), all the same dinner parties, etc etc - one of the gang.

And she is smart, of course, and has spent an entire career not writing any decisions on anything - thus enabling herself to be confirmed.

I should be shocked about all the attacks based on her looks rather than her record being thrown by the teabaggers but saddly I'm not.

Great choice Mr. Pres, I'm glad that the court is beginning to look a little more like America, considering more than half of Americans are Women. And to boot she and Associate Justice Sotomayor are highly intelligent.

Yes teabaggers you may have the 'beautiful' women as you claim but we have the smart ones. And as to what beauty you may be refering to, I guess you're only refering to the outside beauty, b/c inside beauty is something Republicans don't know anything about.

I have a mental picture of this nominee eating a plate of pot-laced brownies while contemplating the future value of said experience. Can you tell ? : )

Tickles, sarcasm really doesn't convey a message well. You've been learning from Rush Limbaugh, a true mental midget.
