Ex-teacher pleads guilty to girl's murder

A former Sunday school teacher pleaded guilty to murder Monday in the death of an 8-year-old girl, a court official said. Melissa Huckaby was charged with kidnapping, murder and rape in the death of Sandra Cantu, who was a friend of Huckaby's daughter. Sandra's body was found in 2009 in a suitcase submerged in a pond on a dairy farm. She is to be sentenced June 14, said Sharon Morris, assistant administrator for San Joaquin County Superior Court. The girl was last seen alive in the mobile home park where she lived with her family in Tracy, California - the same mobile home park where Huckaby lived with her 5-year-old daughter.

Why ask why? Why she committed this crime will probably never be known. And knowing why she did it does not make the murder of this innocent child any less heinous.

I have confidence the sentencing judge will give her the punishment she deserves.

Sandra is gone unfortunately. I hope her family can move forward because you never get over something like this. You only learn to live with it.

I hope Huckaby's daughter gets the help she will need to deal with the trauma of knowing what her mother did.

This is not about religion. Its about a little girl who was tragically murdered by a trusted adult. Let's not lose sight of that.

Did she ever give an answer of WHY she did such an act?

We can judge, but we cannot feign to understand. The time has come to see through hatred, no matter how strong it feels in you. The time of an eye for an eye is past. Look more deeply within yourself and seek compassion and forgiveness to change the cycle. Whether you are religious or atheist, it doesn't matter. Love all without exception regardless of action. Yes, discern, be cautious, try to be wise. This act is frightening and cautionary, but don't let the fear stand in the way of your love. Though perhaps never perfect, this is your highest gift of all. Keep trying.

Please don't refer to this person as a teacher. She's a Sunday school teacher and no offense, does not count as an actual school teacher.

Just another sad situation that needs to be dealt with by the law. However, it will not only affect Huckaby's daughter in a horrible way, but it affects everyone who hears of this atrocity.

This is a really sick person and it's too bad that her mental condition wasn't notice in some way prior to this horrendous act.

She will pay one way or the other.
