Los Angeles passes Arizona boycott over immigration law

The Los Angeles City Council overwhelmingly approved a boycott of Arizona-based businesses and governments Wednesday unless the state repeals a new law giving police the power to question a detainee's immigration status.

Several other California cities, including San Francisco and Oakland, have already adopted resolutions requesting city departments to not sign any new contracts with Arizona companies.

The Arizona law requires immigrants to carry their registration documents at all times and allows police to question individuals' immigration status in the process of enforcing any other law or ordinance.

The Los Angeles resolution passed Wednesday said Arizona's new immigration law "encourages racial profiling and violates Fourteenth Amendment guarantees of due process and equal protection for U.S. citizens, legal residents and visitors who are detained for suspicion of being in the country unlawfully."

The city's legislative analyst reported that Los Angeles currently has $56 million in contracts with companies headquartered in Arizona.

The city's Harbor Department, which has $26 million of such contracts, is opposing the resolution, the report said. This includes money for the "Clean Truck Program," it said.

"The Harbor does not recommend rescinding this incentive program due to adverse effects this action would have on the environment and public health," the analyst wrote.

The resolution also prohibits city employees from traveling to Arizona "unless special circumstances can be demonstrated" that canceling a trip would "harm city interests."

The National Council of La Raza announced a boycott last week against Arizona's $18.6 billion tourism industry because of the new law, and called on other groups to join. Nearly 30 organizations have come on board, including the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network, People for the American Way, the Japanese American Citizens League and the Service Employees International Union.

Critics of the law say it will lead to racial profiling, while supporters say it involves no racial profiling and is needed to crack down on increasing crime involving illegal immigrants.

AZ is better off, most likely the contracts are being paid in IOUs anyway. Oh and just because the city decided they are going to boycott AZ does not exempt them from lawsuits for breach of contracts. Can the city of LA really afford that kind of financial waste?

Wake up people and remember that just because someone is inside our borders does not give them the same rights and privleges and this countries citizens. That is a standard in almost all other countries. Now if you moan and groan about special interest groups why balk at stopping providing specialized classes because someone does not want to learn english, spoken in almost every major business in the US. Consider this even if immigrant is here to work in the fields for the farmers we as taxpayers get stuck paying for thier social support because of the low wages they are paid. If the wages are so low why are they allowed to bring their families with them, it is temporary work right? The farmer makes a very good profit, on crops subsidised by the government. So we carry both the immigrant and the farmer on our backs.

I remember the Gray Davis days when California was just "Broke" and clawing its way out of a nasty debt. The entire country watched as the stories of corruption, and crime were the hot topics. Then as the wildfires ripped through the california countryside that became the topic, some of which I helped fight. Now I sit a listen to those very people I tried to protect from a devastating fire, putting my A** on the line for "YOU" with no question, tell the people here in AZ that you want to Boycott AZ. Maybe you all don't remember that AZ sent all kinds of firefighters to help. Lets not forget the Bridge collapse in 1989. Im pretty sure, AZ sent some help to that little issue you had there as well. I don't know what the issue with you folks is, but why don't you man the f*&^ up and send some troops here to help us secure the border, or are you still broke?? I don't know about you but I need an ID almost everywhere I about you??? whats the problem. Please remember all the negative comments you give the people of the state of AZ, Im sure a bunch of us will be in California again to help you with a fire or some other disaster. You can tell us face to face.

America gave up on itself a long time ago when everything we do, buy and say is in four languages, the last one is English.. Imagine the money spent with our tax dollars just for that. We need to stand up for our values, morals and take pride that its OK to be an American and Speak English. I do not recall going out of this country and seeing signs in english, or any other language welcoming people. The bottom line is we all need to pay our dues, and earn our rights, and of course pay taxes. Unfortunately as far as taxes go the people making the decisions with our tax dollars it does not affect them. (interesting). AZ has made the right choice for them, they live in it day to day and until you can say you do then stay out of it. So east coast, DC what the heck you know!

I agree with Arizona, I think it's about time a law like this was passed. Being an immigrant myself with a green card, I have NO PROBLEM with the request to carry it at all times, and if asked to prove my legal status by the police or other authorities to do so. Why would I? I have nothing to hide. I did at one time when I was illegal and always found it amusing that the police and the immigration officials didn't work together. The law says you may not be here in this country illegale, now it's time we enforce the law!

I agree with Arizona, I believe that immigrants should carry their papers with them at all times. It would be easier that way to know whose here illegally and who can actually be here. and so many illegals commit crimes but yet hardly ever get caught.

I don't think that Arizona is right at all... This new law is going to give way to Racial Profiling that is unfair to all of us non-illegals who are of foreign descent. And yes although we as citizens need to walk around with identification, we are not required to carry around with us birth certificates and social security. It just seems unfair to me. I feel like this is leading to segregation all over again and to another CIvil Rights movement that might not turn out as well as the first one did.

If there was true justice in America, EVERYONE would be required to carry papers and EVERYONE would be subjected to being profiled. There are illegal immigrants who have lighter skin in this country as well as brown. If the illegal immigrants are such a huge problem in Arizona then please focus on the companies who hire them. There are so many Americans out of jobs right now who could use the work. But instead companies hire them to get out of paying decent wages. If the immigrants could not get hired here, they would not want to come to America.

I agree with MONI on one point here.. If we focused on the businesses who hire illegals then half the problems whould stop..

But as for racial profiling? NO! It is just a fact due to Geography that the majority of immagrants in AZ are from Mexican decent. The plain ans simple fact of the matter is, THEY ARE HERE ILLIGALLY! The do not have a right to be here! If they went through the proper channels to come here, no one would have an issue at all.

One more thing, Aren't we as Americans required to keep most if not all identification with us. We can't leave our drivers license or anything behind without because punished one way or another so why shouldnt they have to keep their papers on them.

There is no law requiring citizens to carry identification of any kind. Nonetheless, carrying an ID is generally required if you’re driving a vehicle or a passenger on a commercial airline. These requirements have been upheld on the premise that individuals who prefer not to carry ID can choose not to drive or fly.

The law only upholds existing federal statutes. In addition, the increasing amount of drug trafficking related crimes to the ranchers within 100 miles of the border are haneous. Nobody wants to talk about that! Do the right thing and just become legal. The outrage of the bill is perceived extremity of the law which can lead to widespread racial profiling. It's not racial profiling, it's not illegal "immigration" it's just illegal to be here without the correct paperwork. Oh and it's illegal for police to profile so if it happens to a legal resident you can sue.

The bill isn't racist; it is perfectly true for people from any other country. A swiss man who came to Arizona illegally has to follow the law just as much as a Mexican one. The fact that European immigrants typically respect immigration laws enough to go through the process legally is not the fault of Arizona lawmakers, and cannot be their responsibility.

This law does not care whether you are red, white, blue, brown or green it just wants you to be legal. If you are illegal alien, try coming in the legal way. And guess what , then you would have all the legal papers and you would not have any problems of deportation.
But then if you got in trouble or did something illegal we would know who you are. Of course then you could not break the law with impunity, because we would know who you are and you could not run back to Mexico and hide.

I cant believe so many people are giving in to people that are breaking Federal law. They have no right to be here unless they come here and follow all laws pertaining to our immigration laws. So many great people come here and do it the right way. We cannot and will not let these illegal immigrants push us around. They have no rights, Federal law already states they have to carry there ID with them at all times. Just like every other Country. I here of so many people saying my wife is here illegally this will tear us apart. Well she made the decision to come here and break our laws. Too bad, get out and try coming back the right way. It is a privledge to be here. LA and all other citys can go to hell. we will be just fine in the long run. All these people that are standing up for these illegal immigrants are the racist ones. They are against the united states and what our country was founded on.

I was going to try very hard to be nice, but this just makes you sound ignorant. First of, all of us supporters are not giving in to breaking Federal Law, we are trying to advocate for the changing of the Federal Law which at the moment is flawed. So many people could have the opportunity to come to this country legally if the immigration was more fair. I agree that any criminals that come here should be sent back, but immigrants that come here to have a better future for themselves and their families are NOT criminals, they are simply seeking the "American Dream". And FYI, this country was founded on immigrants, so we are not acting against the foundation of this country, we are trying to instill and strengthen it. Inform yourself better before making an opinion.

      Dear President Obama:

I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me.

We're planning to simply walk across the border from the US. into Mexico , and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements.

We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws.

I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over?

Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

      1. Free medical care for my entire family.

      2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

      3. Please print all Mexican Government forms in English.

      4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.

      5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history.

      6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.

      7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

      8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.

      9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws.

      10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.

      11. I plan to fly the US. flag from my housetop, put U S. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

      12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.

      13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy.

      14. I want to receive free food stamps.

      15. Naturally, I'll expect free rent subsidies.

      16. I'll need income tax credits so that although I don't pay Mexican taxes, I'll receive money from the government.

      17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Government pays $4,500.00 to help me buy a new car.

      18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the US. from Mexico I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help.

      You're the man!!!

P.S. I hear that otherwise, they are not as kind as you with illegals who enter Mexico and throw them in jail for two years the first time and then for 10-years if they dare re-enter. For starters. So your letter would really be appreciated.

The cops took him to his house and made him prove who he was. In this State, you ARE required to carry a State issued ID or your Driver's License, which you cannot get unless you are here legally. When my son-in-law had to prove who he was by getting his ID, why did no one come to his aid and scream "Discrimination!"? Is it because he's white? Isn't that discrimination? I can tell you that if this law is overturned, then I will not show anyone my ID anymore, because I know that I should be able to be excluded from following any law, just like the illegals are.
