Los Angeles passes Arizona boycott over immigration law

The Los Angeles City Council overwhelmingly approved a boycott of Arizona-based businesses and governments Wednesday unless the state repeals a new law giving police the power to question a detainee's immigration status.

Several other California cities, including San Francisco and Oakland, have already adopted resolutions requesting city departments to not sign any new contracts with Arizona companies.

The Arizona law requires immigrants to carry their registration documents at all times and allows police to question individuals' immigration status in the process of enforcing any other law or ordinance.

The Los Angeles resolution passed Wednesday said Arizona's new immigration law "encourages racial profiling and violates Fourteenth Amendment guarantees of due process and equal protection for U.S. citizens, legal residents and visitors who are detained for suspicion of being in the country unlawfully."

The city's legislative analyst reported that Los Angeles currently has $56 million in contracts with companies headquartered in Arizona.

The city's Harbor Department, which has $26 million of such contracts, is opposing the resolution, the report said. This includes money for the "Clean Truck Program," it said.

"The Harbor does not recommend rescinding this incentive program due to adverse effects this action would have on the environment and public health," the analyst wrote.

The resolution also prohibits city employees from traveling to Arizona "unless special circumstances can be demonstrated" that canceling a trip would "harm city interests."

The National Council of La Raza announced a boycott last week against Arizona's $18.6 billion tourism industry because of the new law, and called on other groups to join. Nearly 30 organizations have come on board, including the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network, People for the American Way, the Japanese American Citizens League and the Service Employees International Union.

Critics of the law say it will lead to racial profiling, while supporters say it involves no racial profiling and is needed to crack down on increasing crime involving illegal immigrants.

I am very tired of the blame for what is going on in our country being put on so called racist the blame is on illegal immigrants period if they were not here breaking the law, draining our resources and waving their flag protesting in America there would be no need for states like Arizona to take action when our so called president ignored the plea for help and did nothing but make some stupid comment about going out for ice cream????? If you want to blame someone for racial profiling blame your illegal countrymen and if anyone is naive enough to think you have to be white to be racist you are gravely mistaken!

Yes, the children of illegal immigrants are innocent victims – but I have to remember that our children, in these language divided schools, are also victims of our government's refusal to protect the citizen. I voted for this current president and now think I made a big mistake. When he says that we are a "nation of immigrants", perhaps he's speaking about himself. I don't know. But I do know this – if he would have told my parents, my uncles who served in WWII – or my great great uncles, who survived the civil war – that they were "immigrants," their reaction certainly would not be the same as this current segment of politically correct people, who don't realize that by accepting this kind of rhetoric, they are indeed becoming immigrants, themselves, in the new nation of corporate states for international labor pools.

    THERE IS A FEDERAL LAW PASSED IN 1956 THAT SAYS THAT NON CITIZENS CAN BE ASKED FOR PAPERS BY ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER. IT'S TIME WE START ENFORCING OUR LAWS. AS A SMALL CITY MAYOR I HAVE TOLD MY OFFICERS TO START ENFORCING THIS LAW. NON CITIZENS ARE DRAINING FUNDS FROM OUR SCHOOLS AND MEDICAL SERVICES AND MANY OTHER FREE SERVICES PROVIDED BY OUR STATES AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FUNDS. IT IS TIME THE ILLIGALS START PAYING FOR THESE SERVICES OR MOVE BACK TO THEI COUNTRIES THEY CAME FROM;

Hey Arizona, turn off their power. LA gets 25% of the city's power from Arizona, so pull the plug and let LA find a new source of power. Maybe LA can get Enron to find the city a new power source.

I love Arizona. Making rules that haven't been enforced in a long time. People wait years to come to this wonderful country and some think you can just steal your way into this country. Take the proper steps to become legal. Don't cry about it being too expensive because its expensive paying for the illegals that get goverment assistance.

    > Yakima, WA is a town about 110 miles east of Seattle. Local Hispanic leaders there, in opposition to the new Arizona Law, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses last month as a demonstration of their economic impact on the community. The boycott was declared a success by the Hispanic community, citing revenue in Caucasian owned businesses was down 20%. Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was reduced by 77%, money orders sent out of the country were down 97%, and the cost of daily cleanup and trash collection was down 84%. Shoppers reported that they could actually hear English being spoken in the community for the first time in recent memory, and customers paid for purchases with real money not government debit cards and food stamps.

Mr. Obama, federal government, put penalties over the employers who hire illegals and transport them into the United States, and the problem will end. NO JOBS, NO ILLEGALS!!!...and Americans will be forced to do the job illegals do!!!...

Doesn't LA realize this could turn around and bite them in the ass? As if CA hasn't got enough problems caused by these illegals, now they're trying to influence AZ to operat like CA? California needs to get rid of Nancy Polosi and the rest of the bleading heart liberals or they are going to go broke...oh, that's right, they already are broke. Don't worry AZ, who would listen to the government of CA anyhow.

The New Arizona Only emphasizes action that any good law enforcement agency would take in response to what conditions warrant – and the incredible influx of illegals – however you want to paint it – is illegal. If an individual or family is willing to break the law to come here – what other laws are they willing to break once they have arrived? Oh, sure there is a nice person or nice family among them – but they are still criminals and they are the minority. The majority of people who come here illegally are simply criminals, doing the work of criminals. LA's boycott of Arizona demonstrate what happens when we allow too many immigrant into this country that have allegiance to countries other than ours.
Notice what flag is carried by those supporting illegals... and its not the American flag.

we all all scream and yell all we want... no one's listening.. Why? Timing is the key. If the administration addresses these issues now, it's too soon before elections. There aren't yey enough illegals here to grant amnesty to, to gain the votes the administration needs, to sway the election in their favor. During his speech today, Obama said that those who are here illegally, should have to wait in the back of the line, be fined, but he stayed faaaaaaar away from threatening deportation. He would rather trash this great nation, than protect it. HE IS A TRAITOR!!!! IMPEACH THIS LOUSY EXCUSE OF LEADERSHIP!!!!!!
